The Lyrics

Part 45 of "The Unfortunates" is where Travers knows he has to resign; the original is where he is on the bridge before committing suicide.
TRAVERS’S RESIGNATION
(Travers walks the street and looks at the mess around him)

Travers
What should I do?
What kind of mess am I in?
I find myself in a place
Where I can’t possibly win.
He has the power I know,
My fate is now in his hands.
To stay or go?
I’m down whenever he stands.
All I need do Is to pick up a pen,
Sign on the line
And it’s all over then!

Why should I yield to a man such as him?
Why should he gain after all he has done?
He broke the law, but he then paid the price.
He has no pity, he thinks he has won.
How he rose up to be an MP
Will be always a mystery to me!

Why should I now allow his past
To be confined to history?
A man who once held banks to ransom,
Then paid for his sins, he lost his freedom.
He should have suffered all his life!
But then he changed.

Not only him, I changed as well.
To come so far, I went through hell!
And I’ve now got to ask
Should this man be relieved?
Should his past be forgotten?
And his new life believed?
I must admit I have my doubts
Should I have sold his story now?

The papers only paid a pittance,
And now my position is on the line.
Will he take action, if so, when?
I’m sure he knows
That should he leave me to decide
If I should stay or opt to go,
I’d be finished, that’s for sure.

So the future’s looking grim
As I look around me now.
And the blame is all with him.
There’s no reason to defer,
The decision must be mine.
To the office I’ll return
For one last time, and resign…
(Travers ambles off.)
