The Lyrics
Very briefly off the top of my head... during WW2 the Finns possessed just 5 submarine in 3 classes aided by the Germans with the Type 11A U-boat design. The Finns during the Continuation War put up a submarine net and heavy mining of the Baltic to keep the Red Navy pinned at Leningrad. However, some Soviet subs made it through and sunk Swedish merchant shipping (to Germany with iron ore). The Finn subs killed many enemy vessels and never lost a single sub. One memorable encounter happened in Oct 1942 when the Red sub S-7 broke through and was hunted down by Vesihilsi which torpedoed it. The commander Lisin survived, but was presumed dead. The Finns got him and turned him over to the Germans for interrogation and he talked. Later in 1944 there was a prisoner exhange and Moscow was embarassed by Lisin's confessions. He was not executed, but was forced to fight with the Red Army in the PTO as punishment. He left the Red Army in the '50s, disgraced. Excellent job with the Finn subs, but as a consequence of peace terms with the USSR, no more subs. Today, one sub Visikko can be seen in Helsinki... AFAIK...

The grandfather of one of my colleagues at work served onboard "Vetehinen" in WWII. Finns were the first to invent the concept of killer submarine, and each of the large subs sank at least one Soviet sub. Nice work!
Yes, "Vesikko" is a museum sub at Suomenlinna, Helsinki. It is the last surviving Type II submarine, and the last Finnish military sub - we do have research vessels, though. BTW, the correct spelling is "Vesihiisi" with two i's, denoting a long "ee" phonem. The meaning of the name is "Water Ogre".
Susanna, I am confused by your sub chronology as Finland did not even have any real Navy until the 1920s anf then they got their subs from Germany via deception. As for concept of killer attack sub, the US had the first in the American Revolutionary War with the Turtle and in the Civil War there was the CSS Hunley that mounted a spar torpedo and went into action. In the late18th century the US, Russia, Britain, France, Holland, and others had many experimentals. Germany surprisingly came in late in 1904 but by WW1 was the leader, their boats sinking 11 million tons of shipping. In WW2, they sunk 18 million tons and the first TRUE submarine (the Type XXI) was invented. This was not a mere submersible but one that could stay down for long periods of time at triple the depth of conventional subs. The Type XXI also had superb sonar, automatic AA defense guns, 3 types of advanced torepedos (homing, wire-guided, and zig-zag) as well as a "V-belt silent drive". Finnish sub history:

Also, sorry about the mix-up on the Vesihiisi name. I have diabetic eyesight so lower-case i and l look the same to me! I should ahve verified but I tend to crank out the IPASOY parodies quickly. I was glad that historically the Finns nailed the Red subs. It's too bad you didn't get the one that sunk MS Wilhelm Gustloff ;-)
