The Lyrics

The Volkssturmgewehr 1-5 was a 7.92 x 33 mm (7.92 mm Kurz) caliber semi-automatic rifle developed by Nazi Germany during World War II. Also known as the VG 1-5, Volkssturm-Gewehr 1-5, Versuchs-Gerat 1-5 and "Gustloff." It was intended to be used by the Volkssturm militia. Volkssturmgewehr 1-5 used a gas-delayed blowback action based on the Barnitzke system, whereby gas bled from the barrel near the chamber creates resistance to the rearward impulse of the operating parts, which ceases when the projectile leaves the muzzle, allowing the operating parts to be forced rearward by the residual pressure of the cartridge case. This principle has been used most successfully in the Heckler & Koch PSP or P7 pistol. The VG 1-5 is constructed rather like many automatic pistols, it has a casing and spring around the barrel and the whole casing recoils backward. The breach block, with firing pin and extractor, is pinned to the back end of the barrel casing. The rear end of the gun does not recoil and has the hammer, sear and trigger built into it. Gas coming from four vents, near the end of the of the barrel hold the bolt closed till the gas pressure drops to a safe level. The VG 1-5 used the same 30 shot 7.92 x 33 mm (7.92 mm Kurz) caliber magazine as the Sturmgewehr 44. Some selective-fire VG 1-5 were made.

Last ditch rifles, Reich was through
Gustloff supplyin’
Volkssturm firin’

Herr Goebbels could’t stand it
Reds gainin’ ground
VG 1-5 was deadly
There was a rush to pass them around

They used you
They used you
They used you
In pure desperation
Issued here and there
Against the Red enemy
Was the end of the nation

I had the privilege of examining one of these rifles. Despite the under 16" long barrel, they are classified as a Curio & Relic by the BATFE and do not require special licensing to own. Very crudely made, but should have been reasonably effective with the short round. With a bit of time and refinement would make a nice compact carbine for home protection or small game animals. I think the company that produced parts of the Volkssturm Rifle made beer cans before the war.

There were actually many VS rifles produced by various companies- Gustloff being only one of them. There was also Steyr-Daimler-Puch that made the 7.92mm VK-98 which was a crude, but effective version of the K98k for the VS as well...

Walther designed the Volkssturmgewehr VG 1 rifle, Spreewerk Berlin the VG 2, Rheinmetall the VG 3, Mauser the VG 4 and Steyr the VG 5 (aka VK 98). They also used the MP-3008 and Gerat Potsdam: http://images.wikia.com/guns/images/5/51/MP3008.jpg http://images.wikia.com/military/images/7/7a/Ap_sg.jpg

Automatic weapons do not build themselves automatically, ;-) Just like before a gun is built and after they are built there is always someone behind it! Great proverb to remember! ;-) Nice parody Rob! :-) 555!
