The Lyrics
After serving 10 years in the USSR, the Ace-of-Aces Erich Hartmann with 352 kills returned to W Germany to become Commander of the new Luftwaffe's first jet fighter wing JG 71. At that time in 1959, the Luftwaffe had acquired 225 Canadair licensed F-86 Sabres that were designated CL-13B Mk.6s. His unit JG 71 received 50 and started operations. Hartmann's personal Sabre was JA-111 and the former "Black Devil" even painted his signature Black Tulip on his plane. He wanted to give confidence to the new postwar Luftwaffe pilots and raise morale. But when the F-104 appeared in 1963, Hartmann disliked the aircraft as "dangerous". His favorite aircraft apart form his WW2 Bf 109 was the new Sabre...

Sounds and looks like a serious airplane, but what does that symbol mean on the back of the tail that looks like a plus sign? A lot of history on such a deadly aircraft in such a short song, well done! 555! :-)
You mean the Iron Cross??? Symbol of Germany and Bundeswehr.

The F-104 killed more Luftwaffe pilots than any 10 aces in AAF in WWII. The KC Star used to keep a running total of how many had crashed, right next to the stats on Russian Sputnik launches.
The LW lost 110 pilots in 270 accidents but that rate is actually lower than Canada that lost 50% of their CF-104s. The German accidents were a mixture of inexperience, high-speed, low-altitude flying, and technical problems with the J79 engine and pitch controls IIRC. A joke: After the "Starfighter" was introduced with the German Bundeswehr there was this humorous saying quite popular:
-"How to get your own F-104?"
-"Buy a piece of land and wait for one to drop on it!"
