The Lyrics

The Lippisch DM-1 has a rather odd history. What started out as a Lippisch project for a supersonic delta fighter powered by a coal-dust burning ramjet engine (Lp 13a) led to a full-scale wooden glider which was being built at FFG Darmstadt until those facilities were bombed. The unfinished D33 was then moved to FFG Munich where the designation changed to DM-1 (Darmstadt-Munich 1) and almost completed as a test glider when US troops arrived. Under Patton, the DM-1 was allowed to continue on in the summer of 1945 towards completion but when finished no German pilot was allowed to fly it off of a Si-204 aircraft for flight testing and no rocket motor was allowed installed for powered flight. The US opted also not to attempt to fly it off of a DC-3. Instead, the entire aircraft was crated in Nov 1945 and shipped to the US where it was placed in the Langley wind tunnel and modified extensively under Dr. Lippisch himself. By the 8th modification the DM-1 was almost a new aircraft with seperated cockpit, modified tail, and heavily modified fuselage. This led to the XF-92A delta and then a range of Convair deltas that included the F-102, F-106, Seadart, and finally the B-58 Hustler!!!
German delta of WW2
completed at Prien

Lippisch DM-1 was not through
Summer ‘45 tryin’
Meant for flyin’

ACC couldn’t stand it
DM-1 for breakin’ sound
Plans to fly it off a DC-3
Were cancelled, DM-1 moved around

German delta of WW2
completed at Prien
Working overtime

They crated you
They crated you
They crated you
For wind tunnel tests
Lippisch was there
Re-designed secretly
Model #8 worked best

Modified design
German delta of WW2
completed at Prien
(led to Convair delta line)

I'm trying to picture an airplane engine running on coal dust. Couple of stokers with shovels out on the wings. B-58's were the subject of the movie "Fail Safe".

The Kronach Lorin ramjet would be running off powdered coal dust with paraffin burners. The Germans successfully used coal to power cars and generators in WW2 and also used it as synthetic fuel (coal gasification).
