The Lyrics

Considering the success of the Fokker E.V at the second fighter competition and the request of front-line pilots for parasol fighters, Rethel began working on a similar design in June 1918, under the factory designation E.3. Rethel designed a unique wing structure that reduced weight am imparted great strength. The wing structure was exceedingly robust. The E.3 powered by a 160 hp Oberursel Ur.III engine arrived at Adlershof in September 1918 for its Typenprüfung. It was cleared to partake at the Third Fighter Competition. The Kondor E.3a, powered by a 160 hp Goebel Goe.III engine, also appeared at the Competition. But due to lacking of a suitable airscrew for its engine, climb times were not recorded. The flight characteristics of the E.3 were reported as being 'almost equal" to that of the Siemens Schuckert D.IV an considerably superior to the Fokker D.VIII parasol. Pilots reported the E.3 extremely easy to land. Hauptmann Eduard Ritter von Schleich praised the Kondor E.3 was the best fighter of the Competition. He had sufficient influence to arrange for an E.3 fighter to be dispatched immediately to his unit for evaluation, even if it was an unusual procedure. Kondor engineer Ehrhardt stated that at war's close 100 E.3 fighters, now officially designated Kondor D.I, had been ordered by Idflieg, but details are lacking. He recalled that a total of 8 to 10 examples were built.
Kondor D.I to use
not in time

German combat fighter was new
Rethel designin’
Parasol flyin’

Newest of the ‘18 LSK bandits
Oberursel spinnin’ ‘round
It could have proved deadly
10 were built, but none left the ground

Kondor D.I to use
not in time
A crime

Needed you
Needed you
Needed you
To fight in the war
von Schleich was aware
Of the urgency
But got the SSW D.IV (instead)

Not many
Kondor D.I to use
not in time
(was not ready)

A fairly conventional looking plane for the time. Germans seemed to have had a habit of building their most effective weapons too late to make a difference in the outcome of a war. Photos of this plane appear to be nearly as rare as the plane itself.

The Kondor D.I falls between the SSW D.IV and Fokker D.VIII for best fighter of 1918. Amazing since all 3 of these examples are superior to the Fokker D.VII which is generally acknowledged as the best fighter of WW1 and demanded in the Treaty of Versailles. Small amounts of the Fokker D.VIII "Flying Razor" as well as the SSW D.IV did make it to the front with limited action, but no Kondors- a shame.
