The Lyrics

The North American XF-108 Rapier was originally to be the replacement for the interceptors F-102 and F-106. It would be the heaviest interceptor of the time- a huge delta powered by the same GE YJ93-GE-3AR jet engines as the proposed XB-70 Valkyrie bomber and with similar performance of Mach 3 at over 80,000 ft!!! It would also be able to supplement the DEW (Distant Early Warning) line and scan 278,000 miles in one hour. An incredible possibility, the Rapier only made it to the full-scale mock-up stage, but was cancelled in haste by President Eisenhower over defense spending concerns. Secretary of Defense McElroy cancelled the program in 1959, but unlike the future cancelled XB-70 the Rapier's design was so advanced that its fuselage and main systems became part of the Vigilante Mach 2 bomber and its AGS-18 integrated fire control system was installed in the Lockheed YF-12. It could have been an awesome multirole aircraft able to perform recon, interception, and fighter escort for the Mach 3 Valkyrie over the USSR in wartime. Another incredible "Whiffer" aircraft...

Maybe just the threat of building it was enough to put the USSR on notice about any ambitions to launch manned bomber attacks against us. With intercontinental missiles available, why build a bunch of planes that will only be shot down. Has anyone considered intercontinental missiles using conventional warheads, non-nuclear? With today's stealth and imaging technology, no need to negotiate bases in unstable countries.

Not for ICBMs as those you speak if are IRBMs (Intermediate Range Ballistic Missiles). What is cool are Russian anti-stealth missiles and BTW no missiles are stealthy due to SAT tech. Even now EADS is working on advanced plume sensors to detect stealth a/c combined with incredible EO systems. Future MiGs and Sukhois will feature EO targeting systems. What is called electrochromatics here in the US is called Miraflage in Europe. Both the Eurofighter and Rafale can be fitted with radar cancelling emitters with half-pulse modulation. There are all sorts of emerging tech to both promote and defeat stealth pioneered by the Germans since WW1. It is funny that even in the Franco-Prussian War that the French military balloons thought to be immune from long distance were shot down with the Prussian AA (Anti-Aerial) gun- world's first. Every weapon eventually has a counter weapon...

Pretty slim looking plane, I bet there wasn't much room in the cockpit. Nice parody Rob! 5's! :-)

Patrick, there will always be a need for manned bombers in case the ICBM silos are taken out and instructions can't reach the missile subs on ULF. The USSR and Russia were never deterred and had their Bears and Blackjacks ready to attack. There is also the rumored Tu-212 stealth bomber and lesser strike a/c can carry nukes too, IIRC, the Du-34 could do it...
