Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

This homebuilt aircraft was designed and built to enable a family of five to escape from East to West Germany in 1981, but had never flown before capture. The family were arrested the day before their planned escape. They were charged with 'Preparing an illegal border crossing in a heavy case', convicted and imprisoned for one year. They were then deported to the Federal Republic of Germany. To keep construction a secret, Dr. Wagner used only non aviation-grade materials and generally available components. Power was provided by two East German MZ ES-250 motorcycle engines. Although named DOWA 81 by the STASI, the family's name for it was Pfeil 5 (Arrow 5). And it DID fly... with the GDR AF for testing at a latter date. It would have worked!!! It now resides in the Deutsches Museum.
DOWA 81 never flew
not in time

Dr. Wagner secretly built the “Arrow” (5)
Time was flyin’
STASI were spyin’

The family couldn’t stand it
Had to escape GDR prison
Built a modular plane from components
Plane designed to run off MZ engines!

DOWA 81 never flew
not in time
Was a crime (in GDR)

They got you
They got you
They got you
One day before
And neighbors didn’t care
Informant(s) told secretly
Arrested, Dr. Wagner + family of four

Built to flee
DOWA 81 never flew
not in time
(family served time, deported to W Germany)

I don't know about this plane, it may or may not be a flying jalopy.... But I know that this parody certainly is no jalopy! :-) 555!

No, the "Pfeil 5" actually flew with the E German AF sometime after capture- it worked. Dr. Wagner did a great job!!!

For the crime of attempting to flee East Germany, the family was deported to West Germany. Sort of like Oscar Wilde being convicted of sodomy, then sent to gaol. I heard of another East German family escaping in a hot air balloon, while a Czech man made his way to Austria in a home build ultralight. A couple of Cubans tried to sail to Florida in a boat built around a 1950's Chevy pick-up truck. The Coast Guard sank the boat and sent the balseros back to Cuba. They tried again, this time with an old tail-fin Buick. Same results. They should have been welcomed to our country, where there ingenuity could be put to good use, and their escape vehicles enshrined in a museum to freedom and the human spirit.

I looked up a picture of the DOWA. Quite a striking design. Hard to imagine building that in secret. Glad to see it ended up in a museum where people can appreciate the plane and even more important, the motive for its construction.
