The Lyrics

One a a few truly magnificent "Whiffer" aircraft in military aviation history, the BAC TSR.2 could have been the world's best bomber in the late 1960s forward, even better that the VG wing F-111 by direct comparison. It was to have used Olympus 320-22R engines generating a max. thrust of 33,000 lb each, with TFR, IR, advanced avionics and fire control systems flying at Mach 2.25 up to 54,000 ft with a ferry range of over 4000 miles carrying 6000 lbs of bombs (conventional or nuclear) internally as well as 4000 lbs of stores externally!!! Good enough speed to outrun fighters at height and excellent at low-level too. The prototype flew only slightly over 13 hrs and although orders added up to 49 a/c, the Labor Govt. cancelled the aircraft with lame excuses of cost overruns and delayed development time for critical systems. This cancellation left the RAF w/o a suitable strike bomber until the Panavia Tornado came along almost 2 decades later...
Cancelled BAC TSR.2
ahead of its time

Designed to replace Canberra soon
RAF wasn’t lyin’
Promised superb flyin’

Most promising bomber of the RAF
Prototype flyin’ around
On Olympus 320 jets
Mach 2.25 at height, but fast above ground

Cancelled BAC TSR.2
ahead of its time
order for 49

It barely flew
It barely flew
It barely flew
Still made the RAF wonder?
Excuse of risin’ costs
Was cancelled in a hurry
Was Labor Govt. blunder

Bomber supreme
Cancelled BAC TSR.2
ahead of its time
(still would be)

Did this one at least make it to a museum, or did they cut up their investment and make pie tins out of it?
