The Lyrics

This is about the WW2 German point-defense interceptor Ba-349 Natter (Adder) that almost became operational in April 1945 before the launch sites were overrun by US Army tanks. One manned flight killed test pilot Lothar Siebert but several more launches were made unmanned and the operation was about to commence when the territory was overrun. All part of emergency programs from late 1944 to combat the daylight air offensive against Germany. The Ba-349 had the fastest climb of any fighter in WW2 at 32,000 fpm, double that of the operational Me-163 Komet rocket fighter and the highest known speed of 624 mph (600 mph for the Komet).
WW2 Luftwaffe VTO
Natter, Ba-349

Allied bombin’ led to unconventional VTO
Vertical flyin’
One pilot dyin’ (Siebert)

Point-defense interceptor on target
Desperation goin’ around
Climbing at 32,000 fpm
Rocket power, nothing’s gonna shoot you down

WW2 Luftwaffe VTO
Natter, Ba-349
Lost time

They built you
They built you
They built you
They built you anyhow
Suicide pilots to spare
Allied tanks rollin’ into territory
36 planes, never got in the air

Wasn’t meant to be
WW2 Luftwaffe VTO
Natter, Ba-349
(He-162 met fighter emergency)

I remember seeing a photo of this one. Launched straight up, nose filled with rockets. Pilot bails out or pops the nose cone and floats back with parachute. Guaranteed lost aircraft for each mission flown. Not the most brilliant idea.

Actually the fuselage had a parachute as well to recycle them with new nose armament. LW pilot would eject nose cone, lean forward, pull lever for fuselage chute, and be jerked forward out of the Ba-349. Both would parchute safely back down to earth.
