go down to the circus
you can hear the lion's roar
watch the graceful acrobatics
as folks swing above the floor
but you'd better not be missin'
the best act of them all
with a noise like roarin' thunder
flies the human cannonball

now the clown acts all are dandy
with their antics and their play
and the bearded lady's whiskers
are peculiar, i must say
the elephants get vocal
and the monkeys caterwaul
but the thing that gets me goin'
is the human cannonball

the train pulled in the station
it must be circus day
folks rolled onto the platform
and wandered down my way
i looked for him all over
i saw him, not at all
i wonder what has happened
to the human cannonball

they'd lost him in the last town
his exit sure was grand
its sure to remembered
all over this here land
they saw him flyin' over
but no one saw him fall
and that's the tragic story
