Original Performer:

Parody Song Title:

"We're Out Of Money"

Parody Written by:

Patrick McWilliams

The Lyrics

A classic melody from the 1930's Great Depression. Suitable for the never-ending recession of the 2000's to infinity. There are several lyric sets on line. I took my cue from the version attributed to Rosemary Clooney. Call it a tax, a penalty, a mandate, whatever. When someone takes your property without your consent, by force, fear, duress, it is theft, pure and simple. Don't let the b*stards control the language.
We're out of money, they took our money
Ain't got a clue of what it takes to get along.
We're out of money, and that's not funny
Five-year recession we've been through,
they've done us wrong

Each day we read a headline, 'bout a deadline to pay
And when we look at Congress,
We just stare disaster in the eye

They stole our money, our milk and honey
Don't claim 'em, shame 'em, blame 'em, whole thieving throng

We're standing in a breadline, such a dread line, no pay
And if I saw Obama, like to look that guy right in the eye

And I'd say, "Sonny*, give back my money
I earn it, return it
Won't spurn it, urn it, turn it rolling my way

*Barack Obama is the first president in my lifetime who is younger than I am.

At least you didn't run out of funny....Time and money are a different story.....Nice job on this one, Patrick

Yes, much of Washington, DC believes that what is ours is theirs. Well done, Patrick. Your footnote applies to me, too.

I've been out of money all the way back to FDR...but politics aside, a nice smooth fit to this golden oldie

This one practically wrote itself. A fellow I know told me that in his native Vietnam, just about everyone is a millionaire. Of course a million Dong is about $5 US. I hadn't posted anything for a while. What's with everyone disabling the "Leave a comment" feature? I really liked AFW's 'right wing of crow' line. And RA? Hearing from the folks who read my stuff is one of the main reasons I post it. Otherwise I could just confine it to my Wal*Mart back to school sale spiral notebook. And, while I am my favorite writer, it's good to know other folks like my stuff too, or at least react to it with some counterpoint of their own.

I listened to Rosemary Clooney singing the original song as I went through the parody lyrics, and the pacing matched really well. Very timely subject matter, too. The only thing I wasn't sure about was the last line. Did you mean "urn it" or "earn it"? Not sure what "urn it" would mean, unless you're going for cremating the money!

Maybe some folks have money to burn. When I look at my savings account today, all I see are ashes.
