The Lyrics

I wrote this nearly 50 years ago when I was an RAF officer in Cyprus. Hope you like Gilbert & Sullivan!

With stealth and guile, we move around the Mess.
We live in style, immaculately dressed.
Guests by the score, we often entertain,
And when we do we sing our old refrain…

Come friends and join the spree,
You can keep your shandy; I’ll stick to my brandy.
Let’s down the burgundy
And then we’ll have a cup of tea!

No matter where, they say we’re on the blink.
But we don’t care, we like our little drink.
Come close of day, we never want to stop,
We take care we never spill a drop.
If you can last bring out the beers,
Fill up your glass, sing out the cheers…

Come friends and join the spree,
Want another whisky? Aren’t you feeling frisky?
Let’s down the burgundy
And then we’ll have a cup of tea!

Here’s to devotion, and to your promotion,
I have a notion that soon you’ll earn more pay.
I thank you dearly, also most sincerely,
I think it’s clearly the time everyone should say…

…The next one’s mine, I think it’s time,
Make mine a wine, a gin and lime,
It’s not a crime to spend a dime
On anything potent at any one time…

But come next day, when we are feeling dead,
Just stay away, we’ll all be still in bed.
After a break you’ll find us right as rain,

And you can hear us sing our song again.
And even though we’re in a crowd,
You’re bound to hear us sing out loud…

Come friends and join the spree,
Have another sherry, top it with a cherry.
Let’s down the burgundy
And then we’ll have a cup of tea!

We’ll drink all night
But as you all can see…
Although we’re tight,
We still enjoy our tea!
