The Lyrics

I always thought teammates were a swimmer's only friend
Swimmers all die for their sport
They practice night and day
But I prefer understand
And know their social ways

A hang out with friends
May be quite essential
But teammates are a swimmer's best friend

A praise may be great
But it won't help the effort
On a normal day
Or help you at the YMCA

Coaches grow cold
As teams grow old
And we all lose are sport in the end

But people who fly or IM
These friends don't die away
Teammates are a swimmer's best friend

Phelps!
Lochte!
King, Ledecky, Dressel!
Talk to me Bob Bowman
Tell me all about it

There may come a time
When an athlete needs a dry life
But teammates are a swimmer's best friend

There may come a time
When they life a high life
Think your flying high
But something happens which makes them cry

Non swimmers are nice
Take my advice
But beware when they start to descend

It's then that those fakers
Go back to promise breakers
Teammates are a swimmer's best friend

I've heard of friendships
That are strictly non existent
But teammates are a swimmer's best friend

And I think friendships
That you can meet quite often
Are better met
If olympians practice set by set

Time rolls on
And pools are gone
And you can't swim there again

But what you achieve
Always helps
You're just like Michael Phelps

Teammates! Teammates!
And I don't mean swimming for fun!
But teammates are a swimmer's best friend

My view on a swimmer's social life in a nutshell

Aww... so many memories from the years past, and what you wrote is true to verbatim. I once wrote a parody "Confessions of an Ex-Swimmer" to the "Battle Hymn of Republic" tune, and I can wholeheartedly subscribe all what you described. Even years after our active careers, us teammates still keep contact and are like sisters an brothers to each other. And one of my dearest enemies in the pool (of another team) from my swimming years is today my skydiving friend. Fives!
