The Lyrics

I continue now with my 12-part series of the German soldier's POV in WW2 working back from defeat in 1945 to the pre-war years and moving full circle through each war year until we arrive back in 1945. This is part 4, so one-third is finished!!! The year is 1942...
Beneath the palm trees, panzers by our side,
We kept believing, conquer scale: world-wide
New offensive in the Western Desert,
We hardly slept
Back home, a RAF raid on Lubeck
And murder by Czechs (Heydrich)
(Reprisal massacre Lidice payback)

Beneath the palm trees, feared 88s pride,
We kept believing: cast Tobruk aside,
Rommel pushed forward against Britain‘s men,
To Egypt’s end
Beneath the palm trees, slowed to an end…

Not over yet, in Russia was a goal
Noise of cannons, the fall of Sevastopol!
At last, our strength renewed, and we moved on
We took Rostov-on-Don!
Thus the earth did shake, we moved further still
We were winning and it made us all glad
Next up was Stalingrad!
Like a fast-moving firestorm, down we came,
Drunk with victory, Russia burns in flames;
All madly fighting through the ravaged city,
So intensely, without pity!
Oh then, Oh then, no longer a mere game!
We were all freezing, no longer jolly
Our purpose was forgotten, when, in June,
Barbarossa provoked second front gloom
Mad rush to Hitler’s folly!

Within his car, upright, great Rommel stood,
DAK in retreat, he was in a black mood,
Allies were landing;
Pushed back from El Alemein came too soon
Brits and Yanks put up a very good fight
Supply delayed had cost us might;
In Berlin, Goering sat on his fat ass,
No supplies and no defensive aircraft
It had proved costly

I watched "The Longest Day" again the other day so it put me in the mood for this.

Thanks Porfle. There are a lot of good war movies out there from all time periods, but my faves are: "Downfall" (German), "Sophie Scholl" (German), "Cuckoo" (Finnish?), "Enemy at the Gates", "Hope and Glory" (British), "Gallipoli" (Australian), "Tora, Tora, Tora", "Battle of the Bulge", "Sink the Bismarck", "Battle of Britain" , "The Eagle has Landed", "Operation Crossbow", "The Guns of Navarone", and "Desert Rats". "The Dirty Dozen" seems more like a comedy :) There are probably more but I can;t think of them. "Peral Harbor" is a romantic dud and "Saving Private Ryan" is good, but overrated. "Schindler's List", "Escape from Sobibor" and "The Holocaust" miniseries are Holocaust films and I might lump "Exodus" in there too...
