Original Song Title:

"My Gallant Crew, Good Morning"

Original Performer:

Gilbert & Sullivan

Parody Song Title:

"My Lame-duck Few, I'm Mourning"

Parody Written by:

Barry J. Mitchel

The Lyrics

I lampooned the US Speaker of the House at the apex of her power. Now, one month before elections and three months before the 112th Congress convenes, I hasten to spoof the Senate Majority Leader before he loses his remaining power. In TOS, British seamen paid tongue-in-cheek tribute to the captain of HMS Pinafore.
(Scene: US Senate Democrat Caucus Room, Nov. 3, 2010)

(Enter Harry Reid)

Harry:
My lame-duck few, I'm mourning!

Caucus: (standing)
Sir, we're mourning!

Harry.
I hoped you'd fare quite well.

Defeated Senators:
Night fell; you too, sir?

Harry.
I lost by treason of Red stealth. (pause)
I'm happy to greet you all once more.

Caucus: (sitting)
You're Blue, not bowed, sir!

Harry.
I'm still the Leader on the Senate floor!

Caucus:
And a bright good Leader, too!

Harry.
You've voted as you should,
And firm with me you've stood,
To withstand the Right's hood crew.

Caucus:
We've voted as we should,
And firm with you we've stood,
To withstand the Right's hood crew.

Harry.
Though elatedly they jeer,
I can handily steer
This ship's majority;
I've been never known to sweat
At a filibuster threat,
And I'm never, never quick to flee! [1]

Caucus:
What, never?

Harry.
No, never!

Senate:
What, never?

Harry.
Hardly ever!

Caucus:
He's hardly ever quick to flee!
Then give three cheers, there's two months more [2]
For the hard-nosed Leader on the Senate floor!
Then give three cheers, before Jan. 4, [3]
For our Leader on the Senate floor!

Harry.
I did my best to satisfy O's call.

Defeated Senators:
And with you we're homeward sent.

Harry.
You're unfortunately right,
And I think of it with fright
To return from Congress' tent.

Defeated Senators:
We're unfortunately right,
And we think of it with fright
To return from Congress' tent.

Harry.
Bill language I excuse,
So clever and obtuse;
I often pass a bill in haste.
Don't bother me to read
Stock hazy legal screed;
I never have the time to waste.

Caucus:
What, never?

Harry.
No, never!

Caucus:
What, never?

Harry.
Hardly ever!

Caucus:
Hardly ever has the time to waste.
Then give three cheers, there's two months more,
For the ill-read Leader on the Senate floor!
Then give three cheers, before Jan. 4,
For our Leader on the Senate floor!
[1] Congress adjourned early (Sept. 29) to go to campaign in home districts or states, leaving FY2011 budgets and CY2011 tax rates in limbo.
[2] What further mischief will be perpetrated during those two months?
[3] I allow for New Years being a four-day weekend. ;- )

I'd retroactively change "treason of" to "treasonous" and "before Jan. 4" to "until Jan. 4" in two places.

This "quacks" me up. Too bad the birds flew before completing their work. Gilbert and Sullivan rarely has it so good. ;D

Ah, Barry, me ould son... I canna vote on this one, because it goeth past my Gilbert & Sullivan familiarity; it cometh not into my head tonight, despite (or perhaps because of?) the draught of Tullamore in my glass. But it looks and "sounds" great, and the ideas are wonderful. Let us fervently hope they come to pass! Amen!
