Song Parodies -> Tom Dooley
| Original Song Title: | "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" |
| Original Performer: | Gene Autry |
| Parody Song Title: | "Tom Dooley" |
| Parody Written by: | Patrick McWilliams |
If I could sing "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" to the tune of "Tom Dooley", does that mean I can sing "Tom Dooley" to the tune of "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer"? No. I can't sing worth a damn at all. But as the Japanese say, "Karaoke", meaning, "I can't sing, but I don't let that stop me". So here goes a verse in reverse that's even worse:
You've seen "Tom Horn", "In Cold Blood" and
"Braveheart" and "Ox Bow"
On your TV some night
The Late Late Show
But do you recall
The most famous hanging of all?
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Gotta hang your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you are bound to die
This time tomorrow morning
Wonder where I'm gonna be
If it hadn't been for Grayson
I could be in Tennessee
Met her on the mountain top
There I took her life
Met her on the mountain top
Stabbed her with my switchblade knife
This time tomorrow morning
Know just where I'm going to be
Down there in the Lonesome Valley
Hanging from a white oak tree
Met her on the mountain top
There I took her life
Met her on the mountain top
Stabbed her with my switchblade knife
This time tomorrow morning
Know just where I'm gonna be
Down there in the Lonesome Valley
Hanging from a white oak tree
Hanging from a white oak tree
"Braveheart" and "Ox Bow"
On your TV some night
The Late Late Show
But do you recall
The most famous hanging of all?
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Gotta hang your head and cry
Hang down your head, Tom Dooley
Poor boy, you are bound to die
This time tomorrow morning
Wonder where I'm gonna be
If it hadn't been for Grayson
I could be in Tennessee
Met her on the mountain top
There I took her life
Met her on the mountain top
Stabbed her with my switchblade knife
This time tomorrow morning
Know just where I'm going to be
Down there in the Lonesome Valley
Hanging from a white oak tree
Met her on the mountain top
There I took her life
Met her on the mountain top
Stabbed her with my switchblade knife
This time tomorrow morning
Know just where I'm gonna be
Down there in the Lonesome Valley
Hanging from a white oak tree
Hanging from a white oak tree
You're going to get this one stuck in the back of your head. Then, come December, as you're walking through the mall, and the music starts coming out of the ceiling...

Clever dark-humored switch!
Wait, are we talkin' Rudolph or Phil Specter here? Excellent dynamic duo today.
Tricky switchin' this way. too
Of course you can! See comment at your other post! ... agree that it would have been more timely at around Christmas season, but 555.
I wonder what would happen some St Patrick's Day if I started singing "Danny Boy" with the lyrics from "Die Fahne Hoch". I bet most would think I was doing some original Gaelic version of the song.
