The Lyrics

One of my favorite characters from the ridiculous but funny "Hogan's Heroes" was Ivan Dixon as USAAC Staff Sgt. James Kinchloe who played a Black radio operator at Stalag XIII. Kinchloe had come from Detroit, knew some boxing, and worked for the telephone company... so he was perfect for working communications. His German language skills also allowed him to fool German troops and parody Hitler! In one episode he had to fight like Jesse Owens against Stalag XIII's German boxer Bruno and he beat him (using delaying tactics against Klink and Burkhalter) as Hogan performed sabotage. And he acted as an African Prince once as well as Parisian doorman! Scored with an O.S.S. woman too!
“Hogan’s Heroes” was so delightful
A show featuring a Negro
Who was on the radio?
‘Twas Kinchloe! ‘Twas Kinchloe! ‘Twas Kinchloe!

US Army Air Corps Staff Sergeant
From Detroit and knew some boxing
Stalag XIII fought Bruno
‘Twas Kinchloe! ‘Twas Kinchloe! ‘Twas Kinchloe!

He snuck out with Hogan at night
Wore disguises and fake uniforms!
As an African Prince was a sight
O.S.S. beauty he scored!

Getting caught odds-defying
On the air, good German lying
He did it so well, don’t you know?
‘Twas Kinchloe! ‘Twas Kinchloe! ‘Twas Kinchloe!

My kid sister was doing Europe by Eurail pass some thirty years ago. Being a huge fan of Hogan's Heroes, she muttered the catchphrase of Sergeant Schultz "I see nothing" while she was traveling on a train. At which point, an elderly woman sitting across from her started and said, "Why did you say that?" ...... My sister started to explain that it was a catchphrase of a character on a show called Ho- and the woman interrupted and said "Hogan's Heroes; I know. My name is Lotte Klemperer; my brother, Werner, played Colonel Klink" .... So imagine that, Rob. My kid sister channels Sgt Schultz on a train in Europe and ends up meeting Klink's sister.

CML, that's awesome! In my life I have met a lot of celebrities but as for Germans I have met a Fallschirmjaeger that took Eben Emael, a panzer VI tank commander that destroyed many T-34s, and various other LW and Kriegsmarine men. I met them at places of work and also at our local German deli. "Hogan's Heroes" was a comedy but in real-life the Luft Stalags could be brutal and the SS/Gestapo would have executed the airment that spied on the show. But HH was pure entertainment with ridiculous schemes and missions. The Germans were always played as inept or easily manipulated. Anyone that fought them knows otherwise!

Funny you should say that RA, because that was a point that Lotte made to my sister....The Klemperers were Jewish and the family was a tad disapproving about Werner being on a show where Germans came off as harmless buffoons ... for obvious reasons ......... At which point my sister said, "You're telling me Klink was Jewish? Wow, that explains everything! But how did he hide it from Major Hochstrasser?" (no, she didn't)
