The Lyrics

I should have expected as much. To add drama to his attack on Republicans for "their" upcoming sequestration cuts, President Obama stood surrounded by carefully-selected uniformed first responders. His message that Republicans don't care if your house burns down was once again overshadowed by his use of people as scenery. Let's see...white-coated "doctors" from central casting when promoting his health care proposals, picture book teachers for promoting his educational agenda, uniformed military personnel to try to hang cuts in veteran programs on his opponents, and kids...always lots to kids...to promote everything from federal dietary regulations to gun control. Obviously, it works. Much of the public pays attention to the human window dressing and doesn't listen to the (occasional) substance of the speech. Oh well. At least it's not Bush's "mission accomplished" debacle on the aircraft carrier flight deck. ;D

They're just props! People make great backdrops.
Photo ops - with folks make my image.
"Docs" in white - for backing my health care.
Budget fight? Get grandma in wheel chair!
Cops in blue - make such a background view.
Firemen too - will help in my scrimmage.
Stage managed scenes - while my speech demeans,
'Cause voters - are clueless fops.

Pics my friend - all voters comprehend.
To that end - the public we're dumbing.
In my vids - you'll watch me displaying
Lots of kids - not hear what I'm saying.
Just the shows - that's all the public knows.
So it goes. We'll keep up our drumming.
Just show no wreck - on carrier deck.
On my props - we all depend.

This couldn't wait, for I plan to follow my own proposal for Politics-Free Thursdays. ;D

A recent op-ed reminded me that the practice of "packing the gallery" for the SOTU began with Ronald Reagan. But instead of "victims" he invited entrepreneurs and military heroes as examples to be emulated. Fine job.
