"The Mighty Aviso Grille"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

Hitler’s war yacht
Mighty Aviso Grille
Launched in December 1934
Largest yacht in the world
(at 443 feet overall)

Not so much a royal yacht
As intelligence ship with 3 cannon
8 AA guns, 280 mines
With the Kriegsmarine to man them

September 1, 1939
Germany invades Poland
Aviso Grille ordered into battle
Lays mines near Wilhelmshaven

The Mighty Aviso Grille
Hitler’s armed yacht and still
He hardly ever used her
Traveling on the sea made him ill

Preparing to invade Norway
Grille hit a Danish freighter
Searching for dead in the dark
But found 300 pigs in the water!
(Apparently, Grille’s first slaughter)

She captured a Scandinavian ship
Took her to a German port
But needed to be re-supplied, while
Her crew shivered in the Finnish North

Operation Sea Lion cancelled
Grille became a staff ship for Raeder
Based in Narvik, Norway
Battle of the Arctic played out in her diner

The Mighty Aviso Grille
Hitler’s armed yacht and still
He hardly ever used her
Traveling on the sea made him ill

Then duty as Command Ship for Doenitz
Head of the U-boat fleet
On May 1, 1945
Doenitz announced Hitler’s death, Germany’s defeat

Surrender to the British
As a prize of war
She sailed away from Trondheim
At Forth of Rosyth she anchored

Aviso Grille was to be
Hitler’s entry into Britain, Whitehall
But she never got that far
Never entered the Port of London at all

The Mighty Aviso Grille
Hitler’s armed yacht and still
He hardly ever used her
Traveling on the sea made him ill

She did however sail
Into the Thames Estuary
Laying mines, first of that time
Kriegsmarine vessel in British territory

Postwar she was auctioned
To the highest bidder
One paid GBP 125,000
Then passed to a new owner

By 1951, she had become an expense toy
Owner could find no buyer
And so was scrapped for one-tenth her price
Broken-up somewhere on the Delaware River

The Mighty Aviso Grille
Hitler’s armed yacht and still
He hardly ever used her
Traveling on the sea made him ill

The Mighty Aviso Grille
Hitler’s armed yacht and still
He hardly ever used her
Traveling on the sea made him ill

The Mighty Aviso Grille
Hitler’s armed yacht and still
He hardly ever used her
Traveling on the sea made him ill

Very interesting history afloat. It's too bad she was scrapped like that- would make a neat tourist attraction!
