The Lyrics

I think sometimes people get a little too sensitive about their religious or cultural "ownership" rights. There's no good reason to get uptight if someone accidently "misuses" one of "your" words in an effort to connect with you. Sometimes a gentle correction might be in order, other times, well...maybe sometimes you just need to reflect on the spirit involved rather than the execution. My narrator here gets a little edgy and ends up re-evaluating his priorities... Lyrics in {brackets} at the end are added right after OS song final lyrics with a bit of a nervous chuckle.
[brief instrumental intro]

Said, "L'Chaim", cause I am Jewish
I said to that guy, "Oy vey"
Cause it seems to me quite foolish
when a gentile talks that way

Don't sound right
sounded trite
Didn't fit for Bud to say, "L'Chaim"
Not a slight
still, I might
say that next time, Bud
why not say, "Good-night"?

[instrumental break]

When I sight this guy named Freddy
Don't delight when he does say
words Hebrew-ish; cause me some fretting
all that stuff brings me dismay

Told that guy
just say, 'Hi!'
He got miffed and gruff
called me a k*ke
"Wanna fight?"
Pulled his knife
I had seen enough
time to be polite

[instrumental break]

I said, "Yikes!"
Then said, "Guy...
please don't shiv my guts
I don't want to die"
Told him, "Why...
don't we try
just to get along
and toast to Life?"
{Say, "L'Chaim", yeah}

[brief instrumentals out to end]

Good idea & parody. I like the OS but it's always sounded a bit weak to me after growing up with the version by Blind Faith & then an even better version by Santana with Greg Walker singing (one of the better 70's singers - just listen to the live version of Fleetwood Mac's 'Black Magic Woman' on the 'Moonflower' LP).

Thanks, Andy. Well, Holly's version is kind of interesting...it's very stripped down...just his guitar and what sounds like hi-hat drum cymbals. I found it kind of cool to work with...but, yes, the Blind Faith version has a lot more hot instrumental work, not to mention the back-up vocal tracks. Santana's version is quite fine, too.
