The Lyrics

"Bird in a Gilded Cage" is one of the great old American parlor tunes, circa 1900. A lovely version can be found here. Should you wish to sing along to the parody, use your finest operatic voice!
Verse 1:

The highway was filled with rush hour's throng
It shone with a thousand lights
The cars all moved slowly… most inched along
Just like they do every night
The traffic was merging from eastward side
Fourteen of us in that band
When a cherry-red "Beemer" pulled close beside
From the window appeared a hand

Chorus:
He showed me the bird; He was filled with rage
And pointed it right at me
Smooth suit-and-tie Yuppie with wavy hair
Young snot: Doing ninety-three
This lad, missing link? So debased and trite
'Haps barely past anal stage
Rather snooty and bold; uncontrolled, all told
Lower de-velopmental age

Verse 2:

My honor besmirched; marred rest of eve
On couch sat forlorn, depressed
For manners declining, I sometimes grieve
Too sensitive, I confess
The future it represents: stark and grave
Behaviors rude, rash, obscene…
Are quite commonly captured without request -
Then 'round globe in an instant, seen

Chorus:

So don't flip the bird when you feel enraged
Your duty: Polite to be
Some young whippersnapper may film you there
With latest technology
They can, in a wink, cut and paste your life
On YouTube or Facebook page
And as curses unfold, millions can behold
Your absurdness on worldwide stage

Always behave as though the world is watching... because it is. :)

Isn't 'The Flip" the United States national bird! LOL!!!

Great job. I've been flipped the bird many times, and I usually flip it back at them. Yesterday someone turned around in my driveway and not only almost wrecked my car, but also came close to driving through the front of my place! I gave him a dirty look and flipped him the bird, then called the cops. He turned out to be drunk, a felon in possession of firearms and with a warrant for his arrest out of another state. Sorry if this was too much to read, and 5s FTW.

I remember that song well. In this day of high tech you have to watch yourself. Have you read my parody to Molly Malone entitled SUV Sue?

I thought the correct response in the US would be to pull out a gun and shoot him. Could always buy a Sherman tank - no one would mess with that

Thanks for v/c!

Mark Scotti: LOL-- It would seem so!

Andria: Good grief-- what a story! But next time someone flips you off, you should blow them a kiss and wave instead. It'll drive 'em crazy!

2Eagle: I haven't, but I will look it up right now!

Andy P: Oooooh-- Slam!!! ;)

"You got rhythm...."

Delightfully brightly bouncy ballad bewailing boorishly bad behavior's blatant barrage betimes. Last verse was Orwellian true, but a Birdie much wiser than this one once said something to the effect that "character" is what you do when *no one* is watching.

I'm flipping you the bird, but it means, "You're Number One". ... isn't that what it always means? ... Well, take it that way, and then the road rage won't ruin your relaxation.

@ Andy P: It's happened, which is another reason why it's stupid to do this ... never know what maniac might the recipient, be and "armed and dangerous".

Yeah, flippin' 5's

Thanks Con-"Rad" B.! The Orwellian direction wasn't the original intent, but it wound up being that way. Of course, you are correct that one should do the right thing simply because it's the right thing to do! (BTW, simply swooning at double allitteration!)

Thanks to Phil Nelson-- See you on the "flip" side! ;)
