The Lyrics

A disturbing tale told from the perspective of a student at a Catholic school.... Old Scratch = an old name for Satan in Southern U.S. folklore
Tommy told me after class
Father touched his ass
For a grade in geometry
He engaged in blasphemy
Punishment is overdue
But what am I s'posed to do?
It's gonna take Mea Culpa's too
Better talk to mother
Gotta help each other
I don't know what to think
This hurts us all

They are the holy ones
Staring at your sons
Afraid of what you'll find
When you see what they're inside
Not just communion
Staring at your son
Things they do are shunned
But papacy is blind

Father Vincent grabbed my rear
He gave me a look that was queer
You gotta wonder 'bout these things
You're gonna see what Old Scratch will bring
I think I'll stay out of reach
Leaning on your back while he'll teach
Don't think he will ever cease
Those that can do
Often break rules
And those for taboos
Often like to preach
To your sons

Scaring all the nuns
Afraid of being fined
But they'll help the kids to hide
This ain't communion
Staring at your sons
Makes the families stunned
The papacy's blind

Rants and rumors all abound
Pederasts are still in town
Long debated suits and lies
Father made the children cry
The clergy won't blow the whistle
God is good, but does he listen?
I'm keeping faith, but there's something missing
It's open-ended
Will you free us?
You never really... believed in me

Cause they're the holy ones
Staring at your sons
Afraid of what we'll find
It's like Left Behind
Their plots have left us numb
Staring at your sons
Pope should have them shunned
But papacy is blind

First rate social commentary, Phist, and the poetry is better than Bono's.

Thanks mac... I'm a big U2 fan, but even I'll admit that Bono doesn't write as well now as he did back during the Achtung Baby days....

Not so sure about that, actually, I think ATYCLB had some of their best lyrics to date. Of course, new album coming in 4 months....

I still liked ATYCLB, but I'm guessing that the new album is gonna blow it away. If Electrical Storm is any indication, they're moving in a better direction than their last 3 albums went in.
