The Lyrics
The U-boat was possibly the most unhygienic machine to be in during both World Wars. With 50 crew average and no bathing for up to 6 months, the boat reeked. Crews had only 1 uniform, no laundry ability, and just one spare pair of socks and underwear. A showerhead could be attached to a saltwater external source, but only a towel could be wetted and passed around. Saltwater leaves a scummy film. Most crew were issued German Cologne 4711 which has been around since the 1700s!
Foul smell U,
Type VIIC,
Six month patrols with no bathing
Oily, greasy grunge,
No shower to use,
Eau de Cologne 4711 perfumed!!!

Spoilage as "rabbits" sure did breed*
Ate soy-based sludge,
And canned rations too,
Diesel smoke flavor got into... everything!!!

* rabbits breeding was an expression of white mold spreading. Good news was that when this food was cleared out, the second U-boat toilet was freed up!!!

On the bright side, by the time the Germans invented the first true submarine, the Type XXI, which could stay down for long periods of time, the boat was fitted with full galley, two clear toilets with silent water flush, and a shower with curtain. German crews were sprayed with a special deodorant and the boat smelled less of diesel because it used lots of increased battery power. The crew had more bunk space as the torpedo room had an autoloader, so less hot bunking!
