The Lyrics

The kids will sing this to their kids in 2037.
They made those firm dates
To cruise The Islands
We became cellmates
Sometimes to violence
We used to shop
In long cash lines
Soon we relied on Doordash Amazon times

We got hermetic
Like crazy shellfish
And got pathetic
And sometimes selfish
We would wear masks
Or we would fight
The streets were empty
Got too quiet at night

News headlines so blunt
Needed the best soap
We feared ache or cough
We smoked much more dope
We couldn't sleep
We'd put up fights
And prayed to our savior with all of our might

Men used their cameras to show their beard scapes
We binge-watched Netflix and threw out old tapes
And as a lark
Bake bread all night
Then we'd Zoom meet with each other
Wore awkward pullovers
And lied to our Mom "we're all right"

And we would talk about the weather
And we would hope for better weather
Yes, it would hopefully get better

Remember Fauci,
The health news breaker?
And happy wait staff?
And lone barkeepers?
But who was left? And who was right?
It didn't matter, if you're sick, shut the light

We'd spend the day--feeling bummed--with bedhead
News ruled the night, and they mostl-y said to keep as much as
Six feet of social distance
That was the mandate
Most every instance
We'd hate the drops---of our WiFi
Despite the emoters, there were more blue voters
Then Joe said it was now past time

For us all to come together
And we might all get past this weather
And we should not get all untethered.

The original song, which I only heard a few times, had to be a bittersweet reminder of what our Viet Nam era veterans endured. One opinion--fact or fiction, I never did hear the truth--was that Billy Joel had some actual vets sing along with him, especially on the refrain, "They said we'd all go down together". This was and is a difficult song to parody, not just because of the rhythm and melody line but also the content. Thank you for making a parallel between the frustration you displayed in this piece and the reality of 50-plus years ago. 5-5-5 from me.

The official live video that MTV aired had a chorus of gentlemen singing with him in a concert hall...they "looked" like veterans to me. Thanks for the comment! (and the vote which hasn't shown up yet--although vote tallies don't mean anything any more). This was my first parody after a long dry spell of inactivity, written and recorded in two hours, late last Saturday. If I could do it again, I would have not kept "fight" twice, but it serves the purpose I guess. I kept one of Billy's lines, but only changed "Jesus Christ" to "our savior" just to be inclusive.
