The Lyrics

This song is one of the numerous others which Singaporeans sing as part of the national day celebrations. I can't remember the number of times I mouthed this piece...Note:5Cs: represent car, cash, credit card, condominiu and (country) club. These show a man's wealth status, and women look at these before they marry. Petty, huh? CPF: Central Provident Fund; our old age pension scheme COE: Certificate of entitlement; car owners have to bid for the cert before they can own a car so as to control the car and vehicle population in Singapore/GST: Goods and service tax, 3% of which is included in the bill for you.ERP: Electronic Road Pricing. Drivers have to insert cash cards into IUs attached to the windscreen. The gantry deducts the right amount of value once the IU and the vehicle go under the ERP gantry. Some people are clever enough leave early to avoid paying. HDB: Refers to the board that builds and maintains the flats of which the majority of Singaporeans live in.
You could take a little trip around Singapore town
In a Mercedes or Rolls Royce
To watch your money get eaten up
As you go pass under the ERP

Because it's Singapore, Singapore,
Where the cheques is fat and money flows
Because it's Singapore, Singapore,
Where the money goes, only we know.

There's air tax and GST
CPF, COE
And not to mention the 5Cs
Marriage comes with a fee

Because it's Singapore, Singapore,
We're overcharged right here and there
Because it's Singapore, Singapore
You'll find happiness, when there are sales.

Sentosa is boring
Little to do and not cheap
They have a kiddie roller coaster
Beats me, who can sit that

Because it's Singapore, Singapore
The prices high and the rides are bad
Because its Singapore, Singapore
Some places closed down; how very sad (in a tone of sarcasm)

There's nothing to do here
It's parks and sites everywhere
No little wonder the people work very hard
'Cause there isn't much for them to do

Because it's Singapore, Singapore
We work and work from nine till five
Because it's Singapore, Singapore
You just watch one day, we won't survive

The schools think our brains larger
They cram things into our heads
Most of them are just useless pieces of knowledge
How to use this to earn bread
Because it's Singapore, Singapore
They cut the syllabus, that's all
Because it's Singapore, Singapore
From the HDB flats, most people fall.

Because it's Singapore, Singapore
You pay and pay wherever you go
Because it's Singapore, Singapore,
You're sure to find debtors, who can't pay up.

Because it's Singapore, Singapore,
A country without any fall
Because it's Singapore, Singapore
It's damn very hot, twelve months in all.
