The Lyrics

The Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is used on preparing synthetic fuels from mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen - it is likely to replace crude oil in the future for gasoline production.
The oil will peak, it is soon the time
But no use to freak, a solution's to find
It's Fischer-Tropsch the synthesis for making fuels, it's tried -
from syngas made from garbage - that is gasified
that is gasified -

Add another CO on the carbon tree
Grow the alkane chain, making gasoline
Spice it with the hydrogen at four-hundred C -
With the iron catalyst as chain-reaction free
then condense the stuff
the yield is enough
to produce energy -
it's increasing length of chain on hydrocarbon tree!

You Mid East guys, must learn quick
to learn to drink your crude oil, we won't buy a slick
We'll make our fuel domestic now and we need yours no more
A single barrel jihad juice, we'll close the imports door -
We'll even up the score -

Add another CO on the carbon tree
Grow the alkane chain, making gasoline
Spice it with the hydrogen at four-hundred C -
With the iron catalyst as chain-reaction free
then condense the stuff
the yield is enough
to produce energy -
it's increasing length of chain on the hydrocarbon tree

Now the Western world is cheering
as we get ourselves free
- just add another CO on the carbon tree!
We're free at last!

Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, eh? I sure learned something new today!

MasonR, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is a means of making hydrocarbons and alcohols from syngas (mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen). It was invented in Germany 1924, before Nazis came to power. The usual ingredients are coke or charcoal and water (hot water vapour blown through a layer of carbon produces carbon monoxide and hydrogen - water decomposes thermally), but any carbon-containing material, such as biomass or waste paper, can be used as carbon source. The synthesis undergoes in nitrogen atmosphere at 400 deg C. At atmospheric pressure the result is methanol; at higher pressure, the carbon monoxides undergo polymerization and produce alkanes. At 75 MPa pressure, the yield is mostly mixture of setane, octane and decane - good enough to be used as gasoline. Household garbage can be converted into gasoline by Fischer-Tropshc. If you use a mixture of carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane, you get ethanol.

Slick parody. Science was never so much fun.
