The Lyrics

Did you hear them shout "Drill, baby, drill!" at the 2008 RNC? OS (long version): OS (short version):
(“Drill, baby, drill!”
“Drill, baby, drill!”
“Drill, baby, drill!”
“Drill, baby, drill—oil!”)

We must drill more (they say!)
One hundred miles from shore.
People getting crass: (y’all)
They’re paying more bucks for gas! (Must dig!)
Convention deeming
Out of control
With the elephants screaming
When the chanting started to roll:

I heard the Repubs say,
(“Drill, baby, drill!”) Offshore inferno!
(“Drill, baby, drill!”) Get that oil out!
(“Drill, baby, drill!”) Offshore inferno!
(“Drill, baby, drill!”) Make that oil spout!

Mass distraction (Drill we must!)
Set off a stock reaction: (Oil!)
Don’t wanna stop the war.
We don’t have to help the poor. (Drill we must!)
The push was strong (Oil!)
Going o’er the top.
Everybody’s driving big; (Drill we must!)
That is how we guzzle up.

I heard the S.U.V.’s:
(“Drill, baby, drill!”) Offshore inferno!
(“Drill, baby, drill!”) Get that oil out!
(“Drill, baby, drill!”) Offshore inferno!
(“Drill, baby, drill!”) Make that oil spout!

Up upon the sea
I see spillage over there (Oily fishes!)
That makes me know
There’s a leakage somewhere.

Mother Nature’s
Not in their legislature. (Gotta dig!)
We couldn’t burn enough,
So they had to pump more stuff.
The gush was on,
Rising to the top.
Everybody’s needing fuel.
That is when the rig blew up.

I heard the fishies scream,
(“Burn, baby, burn!”) Offshore inferno!
(“Burn, baby, burn!” ) Burn that oil rig down!
(“Burn, baby, burn!”) Offshore inferno!
(“Burn, baby, burn!”) Burn the ocean down! (Dig it!)

(“Drill, baby, drill!) Offshore inferno!
(“Drill, baby, drill!) Says the Repub crowd.
(“Drill, baby, drill!) Offshore inferno!
(“Drill, baby, drill!) Oil burning loud!
Ow! Hmph!

[long version continues:]

I wonder if you understand what they’re talking about:
They don’t care much for alternative energy!

It’s Halliburton’s oil! (Just can’t stop!)
Must have it! (Till we get each drop!)
ExxonMobil’s oil! (Just can’t stop!)
Now listen… (Till the oil rigs flop!)

Don’t you dare stop us! (Just can’t stop!)
Let the oil wells gush! (Till we get each drop!)
Don’t you dare stop us, no! (Just can’t stop!)
Let the oil wells gush! (Till the oil rigs flop!)

While the fishies say ow! (Ow!)
And ow! (Ow!)
You hear the duckies say ow! (Ow!)
Slicks are burning! (Ow!)
Seagulls die on the shore.
Let’s drill some more!

Seas on fire! (Burning! Burning!)
Seas on fire! (Burning! Burning!)
Let’s the profits roll! (Burning! Burning!)
Oh, yeah, all that money! (Burning! Burning!)
Y’know, Bush was all right! (Burning!)
Cheney’s pretty good, y’all! (Burning!)
Rich are doing good! (Burning! Burning!)
They’re getting rich on the crude! (Burning! Burning!)
The profits higher! (Burning! Burning!)
They’re higher! (Burning! Burning!)
Ah, fueling! Yes! Lord, have mercy! (Burning! Burning!)
We can’t get enough! (Burning! Burning!)
We want some more! (Burning! Burning!)
We want some more! (Burning! Burning!)

Seas burning! (Burning! Burning!)
Seas burning! (Burning! Burning!)
Burning on the slicks! (Burning! Burning!)

(Burning! Burning! Burning! Burning! Burning!)

(the CORRECT Amiright Idol commentary) I am just batting .1000 today. My apologies for my earlier mistake. OK, this parody was spot-on pacing-wise. And the change for the adlibs and the backing vocals were excellent. The only bad thing about this, Melanie, is its topical nature of it. It's all true, and I know you mean well, but a few years from now it won't have the same meaning for its readers or the same sense of comic timing.

(Idol) I have to slightly disagree with ya buddy (Agri) While it is topical, this will be a current topic for a long long time, likely longer than any of us will be alive. Until alternative fuels are readily available, this song will apply. . .Melanie, this was a brilliant twist on TOS, and while I generally keep 'topical' parodies to a minimum, I feel this one will likely apply for a long time, and the Iraq war will be in people's memories for quite some time. Pacing was beautiful, and unlike most political parodies, I really got a good laugh out of it.

Good move doing both the short and long versions in one parody, Melanie. Scansion was excellent, and this will remain topical for years to come.

Thanks for your comments! What is "scansion"?

It's 2 1/2 years later, and in the light of our new oil spill spreading through the Gulf and despoiling Louisiana, I'd say this parody is not only still relevant, but prophetic! Warren Baker has now written his own take on "Drill, baby, drill!" And check this out:
