The Lyrics

Woke up, it was a Jersey morning, and the first thing that I smelled
Was the stench of week-old garbage, and I felt myself repelled
It came flooding through my nostrils and it left me damn-near co... ma... tose
Oh, why don't they
Come cart it away?
Week-old garbage is just so... gross!

Woke up, it was a Jersey morning, and the first thing that I sniffed
Was an overflowing sewer - I got much more than a whiff
And so foul and filthy was the air it made me want to hurl... it
Why they don't care?
They won't clean the air,
So it smells just like a 'turlet'.

Why does Jersey smell so? There's the smell of rotted fish
You have no idea how I dislike
The smell of pike;
The state smells like...
Well, like a petri dish!

Woke up, it was a Jersey morning, and the first thing I perceived
Was the smell of toxic waste dumps - it was not to be believed
It just overtook my senses and it left me feeling so... punch... drunk
Oh, don't they know
Air quality's low?
I would rather sniff a dead skunk!

Jersey needn't smell so - if the politicians cared
They could see a role
For air control
(A noble goal)
We'd enjoy much air!

E-P-A, why don't you...
Wake up, 'cause it's a Jersey Morning!

Leo Jay - very fine pacing job with a very tricky Joni Mitchell number, tough as it was you really nailed it - and in a fully sing-able way, too. Funny stuff, too. 5's.

Here in Central Jersey, it only smells that way if the wind blows from a certain direction... Nice job and as Paul says, not an easy one to match the pacing.

Nice job Leo Jay! Record your parody, burn it on a CD, sell many copies!

Thanks for finding this!

Very good parody, LJ. I can't believe you submitted a New Jersey parody and didn't get a comment from Michael Pacholek.

John Jenkins, thanks. How do you guys find these old parodies?

I was looking through your songs and picked this one because I know how to play it, and it cracked me up! If you want a track of just the guitar and can sing like Joni (or at least mock her), I'll consider doing it.

Hey Rick, thanks for looking up some of my old stuff (to us newbies, a few months old seems like 'old stuff') -- I hadn't looked at this in a while. Notwithstanding the typos, I think this is one of my better pieces. Once I get a better sense of how to record with my PC, I might take you up on your offer...

BTW, I screwed up my pacing at the end by omitting a few words -- that should be "if the politicians cared, they could see a MORE IMPORTANT role..."

I love Joni Mitchell, not as much as you, but I love her nonetheless, and you did an EXCELLENT job on this!!

You hear such a beautiful song, but still can't forget the real world.
