| Original Performer: | Joan Baez |
| Parody Song Title: | "The Night They'll Drive Ken Jennings Down" |
| Parody Written by: | Melanie Lee |
I think it's coming soon, maybe even tonight (11/29/04)...
Al Trebek is my name,
And I'm hosting the Jeopardy game,
And then some genius came
And changed up the rules again:
Let the winners play more than five
For as long as they can keep it alive.
There came a man who played it too well.
He shot our fair distribution straight to hell.
The night they'll drive Ken Jennings down,
With all the buzzers ringing.
The night they'll drive Ken Jennings down,
With all the audience singing,
They'll sing:
"Go, go go go away.
Go go, go go go, go go, go away."
Back in the TV studio,
And one day Ken said to me:
"Alex, what d'you know:
Who has more knowledge than me?"
Well, I am seeking--knock on wood--
More contestants who are better than good,
So take your two mil and leave the rest.
Isn't it high time your winning streak took a rest?
The night they'll drive Ken Jennings down,
With all the buzzers ringing.
The night they'll drive Ken Jennings down,
With all the audience singing,
They'll sing:
"Go, go go go away.
Go go, go go go, go go, go away."
Like Art Fleming before me,
I'm a game show man,
And like my colleagues beside me,
I stand behind a stand.
If you're at least eighteen, smart and brave,
There's a game show you may want to save.
I swear by the rug below my bed,
You can't a run a game show well if it's in the red.
The night they'll drive Ken Jennings down,
With all the buzzers ringing.
The night they'll drive Ken Jennings down,
With all the audience singing,
They'll sing:
"Go, go go go away.
Go go, go go go, go go, go away."
And I'm hosting the Jeopardy game,

Perfect song for his winning and then losing ! 5's
I'll take "Excellent Parodies" for 555, Alex.
I love it! My family and I refer to Jeopardy as "The Ken Show" now.

This comment's Daily Double Answer is: It is a group of three 5's.
He Just Lost.
Very good parody, Melanie. Ken Jennings might have a lot of knowledge, but can he write parodies?
John Jenkins, remember, you must phrase your question in the form of a parody.
All together now: Nancy Zerg! Nancy Zerg! Nancy Zerg! (and no more than ten games, please!) 'Jeopardy!' Whiz Ends 74-Game Win Streak http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=494&e=5&u=/ap/tv_jennings_loses
Does that make this song a "Potent Votable"?
(ABC05N)
This brings to mind Weird Al's "I lost on Jeopardy", but Melanie you did not lose on parody. If this were a geek parody there would not even be a parity error. This is extremely well written and quite entertaining to read. High 5s and I'm glad you made the competition even though you were a late bloomer for this round.

(ABC5) Wait, who's Ken Jennings? I only know of Jeopardy through the aforementioned Weird Al song, so I don't know much about it. And I've never heard of Joan Baez. So...I'm out.
ABC5(N) Very humorous take on Ken Jennings that went well with the OS!!...Could have been improved by varying choruses and by rhyming the words at the end of lines rather than using the words from the OS...555!
Bobpiecheese: Ken Jennings is a well-known Jeopardy champion from the state of Utah, who won over $1 million US roughly five years ago, IIRC. Melanie: Great parody, and I'm an avid Jeopardy-watcher. 5s.

I remember when this story was big news. The only bad thing about parodies such as this is that they are very timely and thus lose a bit of the bite when they are a bit older, like they've become stale. But still this was still fun and funny.
(ABC) ah, don't worry about Ken - he'll survive the torture sessions, reunite with a beautiful Indian girl, and they'll both take front of stage in a massive Bollywood-style dance at Central Station. Never heard of him, Melanie, but I get the idea. Great idea and choice of OS. 555 for that alone, but very well-written too - 555
Did you ever follow up this one with "The Night They Drove Ken Jennings Down"? Not lol funny, but well-written and easy to sing.
Indeed, as Matthias and bobpie note knowledge of this topical story is integral. Pretty cute though, with the nods to Art Fleming at the end.
Well, hmm, Melanie, you are a great writer, and a great rhymer, but I am just being 100% honest here. . .I didn't get it. . .I'm not at all familiar with the story, I think I got the gist of it, but yeah, this is one of those you'd have to know the story to get it...anyhow, keep entering, because you are great, sometimes your topics may go a little over my head, but when you write ones I get into, I love them because you are truly a great writer.
Aw, shucks...(blush)... Thanks, everybody!
