The Lyrics

A female companion to an old Harry Chapin classic.
My child arrived just the other day, she came into the world in the usual way
But there were songs to write and bills to pay, she learned to walk while I was away
She was talking before I knew it, and as she grew, she'd say
"I'm gonna be like you, Mom, you know I'm gonna be like you"

And the birds in the nest laid a golden egg, little girl grew to a woman, oh
When you coming home, Mom? I don't know when
But we'll get together then, we're gonna have a good time then

My girl was 16 just the other day, she said "Thanks for the car, Mom, let's drive today
Can you teach me to drive?" I said "Not today
I got a lot to do," but she said "That's OK"
She would walk away, but she smiled every day and say
"I'm gonna be like her, yeah, you know I'm gonna be like her"

And the birds in the nest laid a golden egg, little girl grew to a woman, oh
When you coming home, Mom? I don't know when
But we'll get together then, we're gonna have a good time then

Well, she got married just the other day, so much like a woman, I just had to say
"Girl, I'm proud of you, can you stay for a while?"
She shook her head, and then she said with a smile
"Well, my husband and I are off on our honeymoon
See you later, we will write back soon!"

And the birds in the nest laid a golden egg, little girl grew to a woman, oh
When you coming home, girl? I don't know when
But we'll get together then, Mom, we're gonna have a good time then

I've long since retired, my daughter's moved away, I e-mailed her just the other day
I wrote "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
She wrote "I'd love to, Mom, if I can find the time
Well, my new job's a hassle and the kids have the flu
But it's sure nice hearing from you, Mom
It's been sure nice hearing from you"

And as I read the e-mail, it hit me finally
She'd grown up just like me
My girl was just like me

And the birds in the nest laid a golden egg, little girl grew to a woman, oh
When you coming home, girl? I don't know when
But we'll get together then, Mom, we're gonna have a good time then
