The Lyrics

when is gonna bite down ?
where will his deadly fangs land ?
he cannot stay on our farm
we need to kill him, says my old man

i know that dogs don't live forever
but didn't know death was due
it ain't too pleasant, but i've gave up hopin'
this dog's too young to be killin'...boo hoo

so good bye, yeller, ol' boy
you're a dog gone decidedly foul
we may plant you 'neath your doghouse
its no darn good to you now

though i've been howlin', it ain't done no good
this ain't a thing i enjoy
its all been decided...you gonna die
goodbye, poor yeller, ol' boy

what do you think i'll do then
when i am so filled with pain
i'll cry for my puppy, then grow catatonic
i do not want a pet again

dad says we'll get a replacement
there's plenty more dogs at the pound
mongrels ?...hell, i don't want any
no one's special as you...my ol' hound

so good bye, yeller, ol' boy
you're a dog gone decidedly foul
we may plant you 'neath your doghouse
its no darn good to you now

though i've been howlin', it ain't done no good
this ain't a thing i enjoy
its all been decided...you gonna die
goodbye, poor yeller, ol' boy

This is literally a dog gone biting epic. If he were the "Doggy in the Windows" his bark would be worse than his byte.

Unfortunately, Arlis' dad didn't come back to the farm until AFTER he shot the dog, which negates line 4, verse one. I'll 555 ya anyway.

"doghouse" vs "penthouse" was the funniest bit for me too. As far as John J's comment, either it was an oversight, or an attempt to sound "backwoods"...like the guy who said "I ain't not never seen nothin' like that before". Try and unscramble that one. Only alvin knows.

...and that, class, is how you achieve textbook syllable-matching - amazing write al - I don't think I've ever seen cleverer syllable-matching than "you're a dog gone decidedly foul" - brilliant - 555
