The Lyrics

Mantle is playing tonight in the game
I can see the Red Sox fans praying for rain
Oh and I can see Mantle swatting those flies
'And it looked like Mantle, could hit the clouds if he tried

They say Toots was gritty though I've never been
Well Mantle says it's the best bar that he's ordered gin
Oh and Mick would know, he'd been there enough
Still it was Mantle, who came through in the clutch

Mantle my hero you were so great to see
You took the field with pain and those scars on you knee
Your legs had died and you drank more than I
Mantle you're a star for the Yanks of N-Y

Mantle is playing tonight in the game
I can see the Red Sox fans praying for rain
Oh and I can see Mantle swatting those flies
'And it looked like Mantle, could hit the clouds if he tried
Oh yeah it looked like Mantle, could hit the clouds if he tried

KT, thanks, this is what makes scouring through all the stinky parodies well worth while. It's really beautiful. If lyrics like these could get the airtime, I think they'd sell even more than the originals. Oh, write anothern'.

Good job Cujo. Good boy.

Beautiful job. The credit and referral were entirely unnecessary, but appreciated.

Thanks all. Lee, thanks for the nice comment - but of course I had to credit you; it was your idea. The referral was because you 're a fellow New Yorker. Thanks, KTD

A home run. As a Yankee Fan, I wish I could vote you the Number 7. Mickey, of course, asked Paul Simon why the song said, "Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?" since Paul obviously was too young to see Joe D at his best. Paul just said Joe's name fit the rhythm better, which, I guess, makes Paul Simon the patron saint of the Amiright Pacing Police.

Thanks so much Michael. Actually, I thought you would be a better writer to pen this one - thought you were a Yankee fan. This Mets fan is a Yankee hater - but I once had the Mick on a radio show and a co-worker came with a dozen baseballs for him to sign. Thinking that it was just too much to ask a guest do, I basically told her that she couldn't do it. She said it was for her kid's little league team - Mick heard her, told me to get her back and he signed everyone of them because it was for the kids. Now, what woud Willie Mays have charged for something like that??? KTD

Although I am not a NY Yankees fan, I do recognize talent when I read it. Kimbaroo, in your entertaining way you've let the world know Mantle was more than a bar on Central Park South.

Amazing parody, from a Yankee fan who wishes he could have gotten a crack at this parody (allthough it wouldn't have been this good)
Jeff Reuben - March 01, 2005 - Report this comment
(Sports) Well done! Never got to see Mantle play, but I've heard he was pretty good =)
Rex - March 02, 2005 - Report this comment
Every time I read it I like it better. A definite top 5 in the Sports contest.
Agrimorfee - March 02, 2005 - Report this comment
(Sports) Place this Mantle on your mantle. :)

(SOTM) I guess you've got to be American and/or a baseball fan to really appreciate this. Still, great write!

Johnny D - March 06, 2005 - Report this comment
(Sports) I like Elton John parodies, and I like heart-felt tributes, and this parody delivers both together in a graceful combination. Superb.
Loosekanen (Mike Armstrong) - March 07, 2005 - Report this comment
(sports) really a nice work here. I love it when people write to show emotion instead of just trying to churn out a parody. excellent.
Charlie Decker - March 09, 2005 - Report this comment
(SOTM) See above. Still 555.
Scathe - March 10, 2005 - Report this comment
(sotm) Still art.
Jake A Ralphing (Luke Brattoni) - March 11, 2005 - Report this comment
(SOTM) Is this based on that guy who kept playing even though he was bleeding in his socks, which was highly ironic as the team is Red Sox... or something... I dunno, we Aussies get no baseball coverage down here whatsoever. Nice tribute parody, though.
Adagio - March 12, 2005 - Report this comment
(SOTM) very good 5's

Nice, heartfelt tribute, without being TOO heartfelt. Excellent work.

Luke, that was Curt Schilling in last year's world series. Mantle played a while before that. Of course referring to the schilling sock incident at all proves you know more about baseball than i do about australian rules football and aussie sports in general whatever they are.

Very good write, Kimba. It's easy to forget, in the midst of all the drug-scandals in baseball today, the spirit that the game has for so many people who grew up with guys like Mick. You've seen the movie "*61" right?
Tim Mayfield - March 31, 2005 - Report this comment
(SOTM) Tastes a little gamey.
