During a 15 page paperwork in academic writing (bleugh!), I came up with the idea of parodying this song, in the midst of all my frustration and mental block, stopping me from writing anything sensible into the project at all...this is my attempt to gain confidence and motivation to keep writing that damn 15 page essay..
At first I was afraid, I was petrified
Kept thinking "there's no way in hell I'll get this done in time"
But then I spent so many nights on essays going on too long
But I grew strong - thought "I'll learn how to get along!"
And so I'm back, a second year
The same semester starting over, back in higher gear
And I told them I would do essays over from last time I failed
I used to cry - and now I undestand why
Watch them go, words from my pen
Deep analyzing text and argumenting hours on end
Though I admit I kinda suck, the best of effort I will do
Then at the end - if all approved - then I can say I did it too!
But yet, still I...I will survive
Through academic writing, I know I'll get out alive
I will complete it all somehow, I will send papers in on time
All done myself, a copy, no...not my crime!
It took all the strength I had not to fall apart
Just trying hard to find some pieces, quite a tricky start
All of the pieces that would come to be the arguments of that
Yeah, that main point of view, the core of this damn text I analyze
But you'll see me, somebody new!
I won't drop out of academic writing like some others do
Must let the coffee beans kick in and let the motivation rise
A real surprise - catching time before it flies
Watch them go, words from my pen

When did Donna Summer do this song? I happen to know that Gloria Gaynor did the original...and it has been covered by various performers, but Gaynor's recording is the most well-known.
