Parody Song Title:

"Precious Things; Golden Years (revised)"

Parody Written by:

NOTE: This is a revised version of a piece I posted back in August, 2004. I re-wrote it because tomorrow evening (Monday, March 14th, 2005) I'm going to a get the opportunity to briefly meet and chat with Tori Amos and get a couple autographs. I'm going to give her a copy of it so I did the re-write to polish it up a bit. When I wrote the original I never imagined I would have the opportunity to give it to her personally. Here's a “two-for-one hybrid parody” (or whatever you wish to call them) - I liked this idea because the two storylines connect so well: Tori Amos' “Precious Things” is a cathartic song about opening up past hurts and letting them “bleed” and then “wash away”. Bowie's “Golden Years” is about picking yourself up and looking forward to the future with a positive outlook, so it really picks up right where “Things” leaves off: Open up and wash that pain and hurt away, pick yourself up, stop looking back, carry yourself with dignity (“walk tall, act fine”) and eagerly look forward to those “Golden Years”. Outside of liking that storyline, this piece is also sort of a “Birthday Card”and tribute for Tori Amos, who turned 41 this past Sunday (August 22nd), is happy now in her marriage and now has a healthy, beautiful daughter (Natashya) after years of disappointment and heartache in both areas. I really enjoy her music and respect her as an artist and I wish her continued success and happiness
Precious Things; bleed, wash, wash, wash
Precious Things; bleed, wash, wash, wash
Precious Things; bleed, wash, wash, wash
Lose all your precious pain, it's taking you nowhere
Tori
Wash it away, babe
Christian boys who made you c*m
Now they're gone but your life goes on
Wash them away, babe

Once they dissed you ‘bout your looks
Those days gone; today you look so fine
Precious Things, bleed, wash, wash, wash
Wash them away, babe
pretty girls made fun of your
Peach party dress; no NINE-INCH nails, Tori
Wash them away, babe
Hurt is gone, doesn't matter now
Now you look back, you've left all that behind
Washed it away, Tori

Oh, you put that past behind you and then lost those fears
Nothing's going to stop you; Precious Golden Years
precious things, bleed, wash, wash, wash
Washed them away, Tori
Now you're OK and you're writing songs
Life is just fine; here where you belong
Husband and ‘Tash; your life is so sweet
Forty-one's fine and you've survived
Did it your way and now you thrive
Stood your ground, held it down, day upon day, you believed and played
your music in your own way
Played it your way, lady

Gone are the shadows, gone are those shadows
See no more shadows, only Golden Years

Write and play as you think and feel
Music ‘biz'; you brought them all to heel
precious things; gone, washed, washed, washed
All washed away, babe
Remember when they told you, “Ditch those pianos”
Tori
*Bose' did you fine, babe

Gone are the shadows, gone are those shadows
See no more shadows, found your Golden Years

Yeah, you finally had your baby after all those years
Good things happened to you when you washed those fears, gone
Gone those fears, gone, washed, washed, washed
(out to Fade)
* "Bose" refers to her "Bosendorfer" piano, the only brand Tori Amos plays.

There's something funny about picturing David Bowie singing about Tori. In a weird way, they'd make a good couple. Anyway, have fun meeting Mrs. Amos, Paul. :) I love Tori's new album "The Beekeeper." It's so much better than "Scarlet's Walk" or that cover album.... BTW, this is the most creative thing I've read in a while... 5-5-5

alvin, thanks! The meetings were extremely brief due to time constraints, but I still enjoyed myself. There were some very nice and interesting people waiting in line with me. Macphisto, I like the new album a whole lot as well. Thank you much for the creativity compliment, this was a challenge to write...but I enjoyed doing it. I recorded an vocal overlay on top of the Original song and it actually came out quite well...eventually...at least I think so (and so does a friend of mine I played it for when I hooked up his new computer earlier today)..."Tori" - no, I am not a stalker.
