The Lyrics

To the tune of David Bowie's classic "Space Oddity/Major Tom", in honor of China's first "taikonaut", Yang Li Wei, who is still orbiting the earth as of this writing:
Ground Control to Yang Li Wei
Ground Control to Yang Li Wei
Take your ginseng pills and stow your gear away
Ground Control to Yang Li Wei
Commencing countdown, on your way
Check ig-nition, and may Mao's love be with you

This is Ground Control to Yang Li Wei,
You've really made the grade!
And the Party Chairman wants to shake your hand,
But before he can you're going to have to land.

This is Yang Li Wei to Ground Control,
I'm stepping through the door,
An un-scheduled space-walk feels just right today,
'Cause my capsule's cramped and full of bad Feng-Shui

For I floating in a tin can,
Far above the world
Below is The Great Wall, and it's looking very small

Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles
I'm feeling rather ill
'Cause I think I ate a bit too much lo mein
Now I have a most uncomfortable gas pain

Ground Control to Yang Li Wei
Your air's gone bad, too much methane,
Can you hear me Yang Li Wei?
Can you hear me Yang Li Wei?
Can you hear me Yang Li Wei?
Can you...

Here, am I farting round my tin can,
Far above the world
Wishing for Bean-o, as around the earth I go

Congrats on being the first on a subject I expect to be sticky as rice. I kinda expected someone to do Beatles "Yellow submarine" somehow but this choice was just as good.

Most excellent parody, original and well written. I see the one's guy got to this one. Maybe he's a communist too. This parody should have more votes and more comments. Keep writing Johnny D. I'll always support great writes like this one. And come on people show Johnny and make your X here.

10-4 on originality and writing - echo the "topical" comment and first on the subject. (As you probably are aware, (I believe) the only man made structure that can be seen from the moon is the Great Wall.)

Malcolm, I take your comparison of my writing to Guy's as a very high compliment - thank you!

Just as an aside - the Great Wall is probably discernable from the height of orbit Lang Yi Wei is at, but snopes reckons it's not going to be visible from the moon:
