The Lyrics

This is dedicated to all the parodists out there who've had people rate their songs low out of sheer spite, without even getting a constructive comment about WHAT is wrong with their work. (Thanks to Jared for his help with the final chorus; the rest is my own work.)
Don't know how to take it, don't know where to go
Someone's voted mighty low
And every time they leave without a comment
and it troubles me so...
(I know that feels like dirty pool)
Feels like dirty pool--oh yes, it's clear to me
They use anonymity
It's just like taking candy from a baby, aiming cheap shots at me

Under attack--somebody's hiding,
my ratings crack--the votes are sliding.
Wonder what I did to make this start?
People thought I was good, but that's falling apart.

Under attack--the tension's mounted,
as I keep track of "ones" I've counted.
Must have turned into a crashing bore--
either that or I've been hit by a ratings war!

This is getting crazy, I should tell you so
People disagree, I know--
but ones and twos, not even a suggestion?
That's an underhand blow!
(Why can't you simply tell the truth?)
Guess I'm kind of flustered, and I'm scared as well--
someone's shooting me to hell,
I hardly dare to guess what made it happen,
though I wish they would tell.

Under attack--somebody's hiding,
my ratings crack--the votes are sliding.
Wonder what I did to make this start?
People thought I was good, but that's falling apart.

Under attack--the tension's mounted,
as I keep track of "ones" I've counted.
Must have turned into a crashing bore--
either that or I've been hit by a ratings war!

Under attack, the votes are shaken
Must be on crack, their votes mistaken
Won't someone please show their heart
Rescue my votes now 'cause they're breaking apart

Under attack, the numbers falling
Try bouncing back, but now I'm bawling
Is anything gonna stop them now?
If there's some way, I'm not sure, please tell me how

A very good take on a well trodden theme, Ingeborg. Everyone who has been on Amiright for a while has been hit by the low-score militia, and we've all accepted that it comes with the territory. These know-nothings aren't worth breaking sweat over. There are lots of suggestions as to why this happens...people deliberately trying to lower scores of talented writers so that their own pathetic scores look better, pro-Bush neanderthals who hate any dissent, revenge voting for honest criticism of parodies, etc etc...but at the end of the day, if discerning voters like your stuff and take time to comment, that's far more important than a couple of ones...well done! Oh...555

Kristof, there's plenty of "neanderthals", not all of them pro-Bush, either
Kristof Robertson - October 07, 2004 - Report this comment
Royce..sorry, I didn't mean to suggest that all pro-Bush supporters are neanderthals, just the ones who (regularly) low vote on anti-Bush parodies simply because of the political bent of the song, and give undeserved ones for pacing etc. You're right, there are plenty of neanderthals in all walks of life. Hope that clears things up.

Speak of the dickens--it seems Mr. Ones Guy took the bait. :-(

While I know quite a lot of Abba, this is one I DKTOS... but enjoyed nonetheless.

Well said, Kristof.

Oh, Hell yes... THANK YOU! 5-5-5.

DKTOS, so I can't vote anyway, but I don't understand why people care so much about getting ones. Do you really submit parodies for the votes? As far as I'm concerned, it's the comments that actually mean something. If some dolt decides to give you ones just for kicks then you should just realize that it's because they're an ass. It's not worth getting upset over.
Dee Range - October 07, 2004 - Report this comment
Good comment, Ashkickass. I get ones for smelly feet, puke, anything the prigs on this sight don't like. Who cares? When a song of mine gets 10-20 great comments and some anal retentive gives me a 1, I take it as a badge of honor that somebody will waste their time to read something that they know is going to upset them. I try to be funny, and if somebody doesn't think it is funny, tough. The gutless wonders who give us 1's without their name or reason for the low marks are not worth a single minute of worry. WRITE ON, and let the reader beware!

absolutely ash - and if they're an ass, I know you'll kick them - so everything always ends happily!! :)

I'll give you a hint, fairness experts: there is no middle ground in politics anymore. When you publish political bullshit, you get bullshit ratings to match. When you scream about fairness, your allies nod their heads appreciatively, and then go out and make unfair attacks. Your enemies, meanwhile, laugh at you for the hypocrite you are, and then go out and make unfair attacks. For so long as you let rabid morons like William Tong disable the comments on their songs and cheat with their ratings while spewing their hatred, spare us your complaining. Ratings wars are just free speech in practice.

I'd like to remind everyone of the wise words of François-Marie Arouet aka Voltaire:

"I disagree with everything you say, but I will defend your right to say it with my life"

Ingeborg is right. The songs here should be evaluated solely by their pacing, rhyming, rhythm and cleverness and not by their political or other agenda. Triple Nickel.
Ingeborg S. Nordén - October 08, 2004 - Report this comment
You've gotten my point exactly, Susanna; there's a reason no "Message" or "Agenda" category exists to vote on. I've voted high for songs whose content/message I disliked, simply because they were well-done and cleverly expressed. As for the folks who disallow comments--although I don't think that's fair to the readers either, I can't force anyone to change his ways. If I didn't support free speech, I wouldn't allow comments to my own work. Still, "I don't like the topic" or "I disagree with the sentiment behind the song" is better expressed in words, not in numbers.

Outside of a minor bobbles, the pacing fits quite well - 4. As far as the comedy and overall, I couldn't keep the smile off of my face as I was playing this through in my mind. - 5 each.
