Song Parodies -> "Meet Pope Benedict XVI"

Original Song Title:

"You're Sixteen"

Original Performer:

Various

Parody Song Title:

"Meet Pope Benedict XVI"

Parody Written by:

Agrimorfee

The Lyrics

Who is the new man, at the Vatican
Blessing the bread and the wine?
He's XVI, he's Benedict, and divine (fine, divine)

His old moniker was Joe Ratzinger
The Conclave thinks that he's fine
He's XVI, he's Benedict, and divine (fine divine)

John Paul II was a hit
Those papal robes will be hard to fit
Once second command, now he's the top
Wants the lapsed Catholic rate to drop

He walked out of the hall, and into the world
In near record time
He's XVI, he's Benedict, and divine

Once a Nazi--a big regret
He didn't want to hang with that set
Give him a chance, raise the flag
While Tom Lerher sings the "Vatican Rag"!

Big name in Rome, now he's the star
Will take the hard line?
He's XVI, he's Benedict, and divine

He's XVI, he's Benedict, and divine
He's XVI, he's Benedict, and divine
He's XVI, he's Benedict, and divine
He's divine!

Agrimorfee to Bob Gomez & Michael Pacholek--- 'fess up, guys. How many of us thought that they would be the FIRST person to write a parody about the new Pope!? :D
Steve K. - April 20, 2005 - Report this comment
I think it may have been Eddie Cochrane with the original version back around '60. I liked Ringo's much better.
Rick C - April 20, 2005 - Report this comment
I can't believe how quickly you people come up with this stuff!!! 555
Bob Gomez, 'fessing - April 20, 2005 - Report this comment
I knew I couldn't be the first, not with all the stuff written yesterday. Nice job on this, especially the historical reference to his brief time with the Nazi youth.

I think we should have an all-papal SOTM this month; that would be awesome. Great song choice, excellent job. Also, I love the attitude about the Artist Police, they can K*MY*A too, while they're at it.

Excellent version of that old bubblegum song - better than the original.

Blessings upon you all! (rings thereupon kissed, knees bent, etc. and so forth!) :)))

Johnny Burnette introduced this song in '59, and I like his record better than Ringo's. This one, though, is better than both!
Dominic L. - April 20, 2005 - Report this comment
Great... But that was a quick job of parodying
Michael Pacholek - April 20, 2005 - Report this comment
Turns out this was Parody VI. Since Chucky doesn't post the times that parodies are received, we may never know who was Parodist I. And, yes, it was Johnny Burnette. Of course, he was a hillbilly, so when he sang, "You're sixteen, you're beautiful and you're mine," it may have been at the wedding reception.
Kristof Robertson - April 21, 2005 - Report this comment
Excellent job, Agri...I'm now off to throw my half-completed Papal parody (of the same song) in the bin....555

I'll be totally honest and admit that I wrote this between 7:15 and 7:55 AM CT (submitted at 7:57) on 4/20/05. It would explain the missing word in the "hardline" verse.
pickle - April 21, 2005 - Report this comment
Yes, I thought about the Ringo version when I saw this. Especially the trumpeting bit in the middle that Harry Nilsson and Paul McCartney sing! Who would have thought the man with heaps of rings on his fingers would inspire a guy whose ring is much kissed!

I don't know the original either, but I went through the original lyrics you (very kindly) provided, and checked your lyrics' syllables against the original's syllables. Pleased to report - they're perfect! not as funny as I would've hoped, but a really well written piece! 545

In terms of SOTM this papacarody has the same problem as mine and JD's; It's up against Spaff's! We were all quick out of the blocks with good stuff but it's like being that guy who broke the world record on 200 meters in Atlanta -96 and yet were 5 meters behind Michael Johnsson.

Huh? There's a new man at the Vatican? What?

Heavenly stuff, Aggro, and filled to the miter with great lines and rhymes. It's pristine, it's beautiful, and it's, um, something that rhymes with "mine."

Very clever subs throughout, Agri. It is truly, um... damn, Spaff ended with that already... well, it rhymes with 'red wine' so you get the idea.

It's good you can make a funny parody about the Holy Father without insulting him. A lot more good-natured than most of the stuff I see about him.
