The Lyrics
Perhaps the first successful spinoff series in radio or TV history, "The Great Gildersleeve," as aired from 1941 to 1957 on NBC radio, is still fondly remembered as one of radio's finest situation comedies. Originating on "Fibber McGee and Molly," the Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve character (played by Harold Peary from 1941 to 1950, replaced subsequently by sound-alike actor Willard Waterman until the end) was not only Water Commissioner in Summerfield, but also playing stepfather (and single parent) to two nephews, Leroy and Marjorie and being something of a Walter Mitty type before Walter Mitty came along. Not to mention unlucky in love (especially to Southern belle Lela Ransom), tenor for the Jolly Boys club, comic foil of Judge Hooker and confidant of druggist Peavey.

Before English speaking TV came to the armed forces in Japan in the mid 1970's our TV was Armed Forces Radio. These old classics were played usually in the early evening hours on the radio. I remember listening to old Fibber, Amos and Andy and of course the Great Gildersleeve especially when I worked the 4 to 12 shift. I'm not all that old to have heard them during their heyday but I was fortunate enough to hear them over AFR on the Far East Network (FEN). Fine write Iludium.
