The X-51A Waverider hypersonic test vehicle failed to attain Mach 6 a few days ago when a control fin malfunctioned and the scramjet engine failed to ignite 15 seconds after launch from a B-52. The X-51A had previously hit high Mach for five seconds and this test was supposed to last far longer. The Waverider technology is being used towards hypersonic missiles that could reach targets much faster with increased hypersonic speed. Only 1 vehicle is left for testing...

I had an incredibly great time reading and re-reading the intro (four times in three days). I even read it out loud to my mom. Didn't understand a word of it, but it was fun to annunciate. You write some interesting stuff.
