The Lyrics

The fate of the loyal work horse, "Boxer", is perhaps the saddest of them all in George Orwell's "Animal Farm".
I am just a poor horse, with my story seldom told
I have toiled all my strong years
for my masters of the Manor
Such is life of horse.
Now pigs are chiefs -
Still, a horse hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest

Lie, la lie...

When toiled at fields of Manor
I was no more than a foal
I got lashes, whipping, beating
Mr Jones was cruel and drunken, I wished that
he'd be gone
Laying low, broken spirit,
where the humans terrorize
I wished that one day they'd be done

Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie
Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie, la la lie la lie

Then we beasts, we took resistance
revolution would be done
and we seized the power
but my lot was no more differ-ent it ever were
I do declare, "I work harder", but
the pigs are ruling now

La-la-la-la-la-la-la

Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie
Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie, la la lie la lie
Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie
Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie, la la lie la lie

Then the humans did attack us
and the windmill, it was blown
to smithereens...
And the wounds I got from shotgun they were bleeding me
Bleeding me
They sap my power...

Under plow yoke stands the Boxer
and a work horse by his trade
and he carries his reminders
of all whips and wounds that laid him down
and hurt him till he fell down
as his life force was consumed
"I am leaving for the knackers -
but the pigs, they do remain, they remain"

Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie
Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie, la la lie la lie
Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie
Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie, la la lie la lie
Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie
Lie la lie, lie la lie la lie la lie, la la lie la lie

I read "Animal Farm" quite by accident around the age of 11. My school system had a book subscription service where you would get a newsletter with various titles and a blurb describing the book. "Animal Farm" found its way into this service and the description of it didnt mention what it really was .... So I was confused and asked my mother what this book was and she told me it was an allegory for Russia ...... Selling Boxerto the knackers (people who will turn Boxer into glue and dog food) was the worst thing the pigs did in the book, a truly evil act. Made me really sad

"Boxerto" -- That's the Spanish for Boxer. Did I mention that I read 1984 (Dies Y Nueve Ochenta Y Cuatro) in Spanish? ... Ay, Dios Mio!!

CML, I read "The Time Machine" in Deseret. Have "Os Sertoes" in Portuguese, but haven't gotten past the first two pages. I think "Animal Farm" was required reading in High School, but I don't remember it too well. Read 1984 on my own. The sex scenes probably got it banned in my 1960's Catholic school, though that may not have been true. We did have "The Ox Bow Incident" and my brother's class read "Catcher in the Rye". Susanna, you've written a fine parody here. Makes me want to go back and read "Animal Farm" again.
