The Lyrics
If you've ever used any G.I.S. software in the past, especially ArcGIS from E.S.R.I., chances are you've written code, or scripted, in Python. The language is known as one of the most concise tongues in the world of computer programming. Therefore, this parody, my 109th overall and probably the only one of Percy Sledge I'll do (though not the only one I intend to do of songs written by or for, or covered by, Michael Bolton), is a tribute to the elegant simplicity of Python. I dedicate this parody to my friends at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in the Master's of G.I.S. programme, especially one whose company I have treasured since enrolling last spring. As for the rest of you who should fall upon this, I hope you enjoy it, whether or not you are in the programme, particularly if you enjoy scripting.
When a geek scripts in Python,
He'll treat it like a tongue of love--
Use it to woo all the girls far and wide.
If it crashes, he won't worry;
He can start again,
All without recourse unto volumes(1) by his side.
When a geek scripts in Python,
He'll go 'til his final hour
Making the apps that'll make him rich.
He'll relinquish his free time
And code around the clock,
If that's what it should take to find his niche.
I'm a geek and I love Python,
But do you know what I love more?
A girl who knows what it's like to code;
Both these two I do adore.
Should we geeks e'er get married,
Tell the celebrant
