Song Parodies -> Those Were the Caves
| Original Song Title: | "Those Were the Days" |
| Original Performer: | Mary Hopkin |
| Parody Song Title: | "Those Were the Caves" |
| Parody Written by: | Leo Keough |
Once upon a time there was a cavern
Where we used to braise the calves we slew
Remember how we hacked away for hours
And gleaned all of the wheat and grass we grew
Those were the caves, my friends
We'd squat to rest and mend
We'd drink and plan to live another day
We'd speak the words we knew
Though they were very few
For we were Trogs and certain of our way
La la la la...
Those were the caves, oh yes, those were the caves
Then a dizzy fear came rushing at us
We saw the scary motion of a dray
Rolling stones were headed for the cavern
No telling problems this would cause one day
Head for the caves, my friends
Our lot is set to end
Let's sling the lance and hope that we can save
The life we stand to lose
Let's fight this awful news
For we are Trogs, and we're nobody's slaves
La la la la...
Those were the caves, oh yes, those were the caves
In my fright I stood before the cavern
Never dreamed I'd live so long to see
In their grasp, I saw a strange reflection
From the metal coins they handed me
Those were the caves, my friends
Now we have cash to lend
Let's fling a chance and leverage our trade
Let's bet on swine and ewes
Let's get too big to lose
For we are Trogs and sure to be repaid
La la la la...
Those were the caves, oh yes, those were the caves
Through the forest came militia gathered
We saw their faces, heard their words so grave
They'd been sent as soldiers, not advisors
To do their part and repossess our caves
Those were the caves, my friends
And now we've met our end
Our sinking chances disappeared that day
We'll live on grubs and shoots
Like tribes of ancient brutes
For we are Trogs, obscured to pass away
La la la la...
Those were the caves, oh yes, those were the caves
Where we used to braise the calves we slew
Remember how we hacked away for hours
And gleaned all of the wheat and grass we grew
Those were the caves, my friends

unique concept....retained the nostalgic feel of the OS
Absolute;y brilliant on this one - from one soon to be Trog to another - taken to another level. Nice imagery, too.
Leo, your caves are deep, man, deeeep... Mystorical parodyin' at its finest!
I see 555 etched on the cave walls...
Excellent parody with clever substitutions. The "Though they were very few" line stood out for me.
Reminds me of the short story "The Portable Phonograph". Wonderful imagery, great rhymes. I take it as a frightening look at a possible future.
I can't believe nobody else thought of this yet, but... Seeing that this parody deserves a five is so easy a Caveman can do it!
Thanks all! ... Patrick, you hit the nail on the head with your take!
What's so awesome about this parody is how it directly resets the OS song's time frame backwards by a couple centuries. Clever, clever.
Oh awesome BatMan, press me to your DieselChest, take me in your mighty arms and whisk me away in derBatmobile, a non-Stop flight to the BatCave, where we can play all day !
Humorous... yet disturbingly profound (or profoundly disturbing-- take your pick) ;)
(ABC05T)
Leo, I like the ballad style parody, one that tells a story and this one does. It has been so long since I heard the OS to this that I'd completely forgotten it but when I got to the chorus it all came back to me. Now that is some fine writing that can make one remember the OS just from the read.

(ABC) beautiful pacing and quite lyrical, Leo, and if Freddy Mac and Fannie May hadn't been quite so subprimal we'd all still have all our lovely caves today - 555
I thought this was going to be a parody of the theme song "All In The Family" which it actually might be but my computer isn't letting me run Youtube for some odd reason.
(ABC) Interesting story, great twist, plenty of laughs. 555 BC.
Quite the trogged-out satire! 555
(ABC5) I'm a little lost here, though that's mainly because the word 'Trog' completely threw me off. Am I missing out on some pop-culture reference here? Or am I just an idiot?
Well, this is one of those so obvious I can't believe I didn't do it kinda things--except not so obvious until after it's written. . .I know I probably just said a very confusing set of circumstances, but you get the picture, great job.
Never heard the OS 'il now - great matches to it, Leo. Nice story telling and flow here.
