The teams start in Willow...every year, first week of March
They cross frigid country..where wild wolves howl and arch
Along the Bering Sea coast..in a land where few men trod
To those white Nome mountains,..and it's called the Iditarod

It's Alaska's great tradition,..that began in "Seven-Three"
Fifty teams, a thousand huskies run,..every team has a wish to be
Arrivin' first with the fastest time,..when the long gruelin' trek is done
Gotta' make it in less than nine days...for a chance to have it won

Through frost lidded eyes,..they view the Northern Lights
And strive to keep their bodies warm..'gainst a bitter wind that bites

'Cause a man's gotta do what..his heart tells him to do
The ultimate grand challenge..for animals, too
So, mush, mush you Huskies,..there's no time to roam
The days and nights are mountin',..and we gotta' be first in Nome..
