The Lyrics

Born dirt poor in Hood, Oklahoma
Number eight in a clan a' nine
Daddy deserted and ran off with a waitress,
But, Mama didn't do no cryin'

Just took in washin' and worked house cleanin'
We never saw an empty plate
If ever anyone talked bad about Daddy,
She'd say it isn't right to hate..

To church on Sunday, back to school on Monday
Plain rules, we could understand
And when any got broke, we knew we'd be feelin'
The sting of Mama's Hand..

We loved our mother, good to each other,
Life was hard, and the times were lean
We just lived by the word that kept us all fam'ly
Respect is the word, I mean..

Emmet and Tom, Carolin, and Mary
Rebecca, Bradley, Sue, and me
Number nine...is countin' little Raymond
Who was only seven months past three

Small town home, in back we raised chickens
With food from a garden, canned
And we'd all pitch in, doin' daily duties
Lendin' help to Mama's Hand

The years have rambled, everybody's older
Some college, others just moved on
Still home, there's me, and Raymond and Mama
To watch that Oklahoma dawn..

In winter, Mama came down with cancer,
Doctors said, the terminal way
All rushed home and were at her side
When He called her up to Heaven that day..

I'm married now, out here in Oklahoma
Livin on the family land
When winds blow soft, I still feel her spirit
And the touch of Mama's Hand..

When winds blow soft, I still feel her spirit
And the touch of Mama's Hand..

DKTOS, but wow...a pretty and touching poem, here. Very heartfelt. BTW, what part of OK is Hood at? I've never heard of it. I live in a town in Southeastern Oklahoma called Valliant (no one's of heard of this town either).

AFW, I don't know if this is autobiographical or not but, it is extremely poetic and touching....555

Thanks, Billy...I may be shattering some illusion, here...but, Hood is like the rest of parody, fictional..it just sounded like it should, or could be a town in Oklahoma....thanks, again for kind comments. And thanks, Rick C. Not autobiographical, but drew from some life experiences..my mother died of cancer...I was born in the midwest, Nebraska...lived on a farm and in a small town..

I was born at Offut AFB in Omaha, and my grand dad farmed all over Kansas and Nebraske. This struck gold with me. Beautifully done AFW. 555

Thanks, Dee...glad to hear that your also a Nebraskan...probably the most laid-back state...If they took a survey, I'm sure it would win for least newsworthy...think about it...when was the last time you heard Nebraska mentioned on CNN?

"Sweet and touching" are not words normally associated with Chuck Berry songs... though "touching" with Berry himself... but this was a good take on a song I don't think I've seen in here before. The last time Nebraska was mentioned on CNN was probably when Sen. Chuck Hagel was one of the seven Republicans who bitch-slapped Dr. Billy Frist on that filibuster deal. Of course, with Coach Tom Osborne leaving the House to run for Governor... If Barry Switzer runs for Governor of Oklahoma, the rest of that State should run, period.
