The Lyrics

MY HEART WAS BROKEN

My heart was broken yesterday evening,
We had just spoken over the phone.
I had no inkling that you were leaving,
My world is sinking now you have gone.

How could you leave me, how could you hurt me?
You must believe me that I don't know.
What did I do for you to desert me?
I never knew that you'd ever go.

You were my whole life, you were my season.
We were as one life living each day.
Now we are parted, who knows the reason,
I'm broken hearted while you're away.

My heart was broken yesterday evening,
We had just spoken over the phone.
I had no inkling that you were leaving,
My world is sinking now you have gone.

"Dear John" letters are bad enough but a break-up over a phone call is even worse. I don't know if this author went through anything like this but believe me, he's captured the emotions better than many have tried to do. Of note, the song "Morning Has Broken" has been published as a hymn in any number of church hymnals!

I used this song to tribute all time great shotblocker Alonzo Mourning with the possibly the worst pun ever ....... Mourning has broken .. The Big East record ... for shot rejections ... in one single year

My HS Junior English teacher had a fetish for Cat Stevens. Talked about him all the time, made us study his lyrics. And JS is right about the liturgical qualities of the OS. My teacher was a Jesuit and made that very point. He basically treated all Cat Stevens lyrics like Holy Writ

CML, I forgot about Alonzo. He hasn't had a chance to star in insurance commercials like Dikembe Matumbo (SP??)! Maybe Alonzo's new career can take off after the court--who knows? As for your HS English teacher, I can only guess what he did with "Moon Shadow" and other of Cat's songs from the album "Tea for the Tillerman".

You got the right album, JS, wrong song. His faves were, "Where Do The Children Play?" and "Father And Son." Of course, twenty years down the road, this Jesuit's quasi-Christ figure converts to Islam ..... And Mutumbo's name is spelled .... like I just spelled it
