*The Berlaymont is the EU Commission building in Brussels
They started off with coal and steel in back in 1951
Their really big adventure had only just begun
They had to find a way to stop that German war machine
They had to find a way to build their European dream
A supranational entity was what they had to build
If they could pool their sovereignty their hopes might be fulfilled
Hiroshima Dresden Auschwitz so much horror so much pain
They had to try to stop it ever happening again
The building blocks of warfare were their first priority
After coal and steel came atomic energy
Then they had to deal with those cartels and concentrations
Like Krupps and IG Farben that had wrought such devastation
With Rome and Paris safely signed they had a firm foundation
For creating institutions making laws and regulations
They built a customs union they dreamed of federation
Of a truly common market of economic integration
The freedoms that they fostered were the factors of production
people goods and capital - moving freely no obstruction
of course there's always bound to be skulduggery corruption
but that's a price worth paying for and end to warfare and destruction
Is the United States of Europe the next item on their list
With the Euro and the ERB it gets harder to resist
And will that be the endgame or just a step along the way
To global integration --- the new world order ......who can say....
