The Lyrics

originally written by Wilbert Harrison
Goin' to Kansas City
Kansas City here I come
Goin' to Kansas City
Kansas City here I come
Got some easy migrant day jobs there
I'm gonna get me some

Gonna be standin' on the corner
12th Street and Vine
I'm gonna be standin' on the corner
12th Street and Vine
With my Kansas City ball cap
And a little bit of wine

Well I might take a train
Might take a plane
But somehow someway gringo
Gonna get there the same

Goin' to Kansas City
Kansas City here I come
Got some good welfare benefits there
I'm gonna get me some

Gonna send my wife money
And have her come, yeah

Got some Mexican amigos there
I'm gonna get hold of one
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

If I'm asked about that guy
I know I'm gonna lie
Gotta help my friend
Oh god, that's the reason why

Goin' to Kansas City
Kansas here I come, oh here I come
Got some easy migrant jobs there
I'm gonna get me one
Oh yeah, I'm gonna get hold of one
Got some good welfare benefits there
And I'm gonna get me some, yeah

Michael Pacholek - October 12, 2003 - Report this comment
It was written by Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller, Mr. Prejudice. Wilbert Harrison has the best-known version, but not the first, maybe not even the hundred and first. It was recorded by just about every R&B singer of the Fifties.
