Original Song Title:

"Somebody That I Used To Know"

Original Performer:

Gotye (feat. Kimbra)

Parody Song Title:

"Not The Wizard That I Used To Know (from LOTR: OMG!)"

Parody Written by:

Wendy Christopher

The Lyrics

This covers Gandalf's meeting with Saruman that all goes kind of pear-shaped when Saruman suggests joining with Sauron. Theoretically this would mean Gotye plays Gandalf and Kimbra plays Saruman, but of course in reality (well, okay, the virtual reality that is this project anyway...) the dumping of two cinematic legends COULD NOT HAPPEN. So Christopher Lee is just going to have to dust off his tenor voice for this one - I'm sure he's up to the job. ;^)

And here is a link to the original song.
Now I think I know why you have come to see me
Sauron is back and you’re afraid we’re gonna die
You know where the Ring of Power’s at?
Why did you wait so long to tell me that?
I think that Hobbit pot has made your brain go dreamy

Well I have predicted Sauron knows what’s going on here
And it’s too late to fight ‘cos we’re… already screwed
Now he is watching with his lidless eye
Rounding up a ton of Uruk-Hai
I know because I looked inside… my palantir

But you shouldn’t really touch that thing
Don’t know where the others are and who else might be watching
Saruman you’ve changed somehow
You’re talking just like Sauron is your best mate now
But we can’t team up with Club Evil
You’re the White you should be setting us a good example
It looks like you don’t care much though
Now you’re not the wizard that I used to know
You are not the wizard that I used to know
Why aren’t you the wizard that I used to know?

Sauron’s side is for the win I think we should switch over
Might as well the Nine already headed off to Hobbiton
But since you simply won’t debate
Think I’m gonna have to set you straight
I cannot let you help Frodo
‘Cos I’m all excited thinking how that power could be used, y’know…

Oh no why did you just shut the doors,
Take my staff and knock me backwards on your shiny black floors?
Just quit with throwing me around
You can’t treat me like that even though I’m one rank down
Now it’s pretty clear whose side you’re on
Get the feeling this is something not up for discussion
And you’re not gonna let me go
Now you’re not the wizard that I used to know

SARUMAN: (Old buddy… you used to know… no buddy!)
GANDALF: No you’re not the wizard that I used to know!
SARUMAN: (Unlucky… you have to go… old buddy!)
GANDALF: Where’s the bloody Saruman I used to know?

Thrown in the air….
That’s not fighting fair…
But you don’t care…
Bad wizard!

Christopher Lee's tenor? Now that would be something! I thought the girl's voice doing Saruman was even funnier.

I must confess I usually have to force myself to go to the OS but today I was pleasantly surprised. Though the voices do nothing for me, the groove is irresistible (not that your words need a spoonful of sugar to let the parody go down!). So perhaps I should take back the comment I made on OM Ribber's LOTR effort today.

You'll find the LOTR thread under song parodies on the Amiright home page.

Thanks for all the lovely comments, everyone!

@Lifeliver: it's got a very addictive beat to it, hasn't it? It came out of nowhere and then became this gigantic hit for Gotye, who was pretty much unknown before then. Even though I've still got some more hobbit numbers to do, don't fear - I shan't be subjecting you to any more One Direction songs. I couldn't face that either - it's only after you've heard more than two of them you realise (sorry 1D fans!) that they actually all sound the same. *Looks upwards for lightning bolts*

I wonder if Christopher Lee would be up for doing sporano? I guess if he and Sir Ian are prepared to do their own stunts for their fight scene he might give it a shot ;^)

This is great. Very funny and captures a very cool LOTR scene. I've been hearing very good things about this and other LOTR parodies you've done recently Wendy. I started a thread in the forums for any interested authors to post our collective LORT/HOBBIT work all in one place. Post your stuff in my thread if you're interested. It's in the SONG PARODIES section
