This is an odd weapon that gun enthusiasts seem to forget about when talking about the eventual HK G-3 replacement. The G-3 originated from the Spanish Cetme which was derived from fleeing Mauser gun builders in 1945 based on the STG-45 assault rifle. When returning to W Germany they became HK and the Cetme was modified into the G-3. In 1970 Rheinmetall AG proposed an odd bullpup design, the RH-70, as a replacement, but it was too bizarre and W Germany already had the HK G-11 caseless in development. So it got rejected. The G-11 was planned to equip the entire German Army and SFs in 1990 but with reunification it got relegated to SFs for a short time and then shelved. A shame, it was the most advanced combat rifle in history with a cylinder breech and caseless ammo until Rheinmetall came back since 2003 with on-going development of a plasma rifle! Rheinmetall WM already invented a plasma taser in 2003 for the Westphalia Polizei.
